Offroaders in Georgia are often not very selective of where they think their vehicles will go. Great bunch of guys, though!

 

How many times did that yutz work for 10 minutes to get past something and keep going deeper? Comes a point when you need to accept "god does NOT want you getting there". Time to turn around or just back out ...

Is that one of the hills that you just use Low Low Low gear and slowly let the gearing regulate your speed?

I live in the SE and have never seen such.

 

AND the local wildlife came out to welcome you to the top, AWESOME!!!!!! That's a Dad trip to remember for ever.

 

The highest point east of the Mississippi is Mt Mitchell in NC, and the approach to that is disgustingly civilized ... drive right up to it.

Out west there are deserts and barren mountain-tops. Also tree-topped smaller mountains. The first reports of Yellowstone were dismissed as drunken delusions. "Out west" can take your breath away.

 

Yes it definitely is! Had it 4 low & 1st gear and still was using the brakes!

 

You’re so right, man. This will be a trip my dad and I remember forever! He’s the one who got me into off-roading & into my first taco, so this was a really special trip for us.

 

I have been down the Dragons Tail (the fastest 11 miles on the slowest road with 318 curves) on several different motorcycles. Had to replace the floorboards on my FLHTP-I and the foot pegs on my FXRS Harleys, but I'd love to go out west and camp really in the stars on one of those tops....

I think just sitting there in the night breeze with darkness all around except for the stars would give a new perspective on life!

 

South Rim of the Grand Canyon, Yavapai Point ... about as far from "city lights" as you can find. The number of stars you can see is unlike anything you can get back east, my opinion.

At the border of AZ/CA between I-8 and I-10 is "Imperial Sand Dunes National Recreational Area". Here is just one of the dunes you will find there (between October and April 15 is sand buggies, though). The fuzzy in the air is blowing sand, and the sunken area I think is called a "witch's well" because it is easy to fall down the side of the dune.

 

I'd even like to try Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway from Estes Park to the town of Grand Lake in Colorado. I understand that it is the highest continuously paved road in the United States, reaching an elevation of 12,183 feet. Right now I am 233' above sea level.

 

I may have to drive up to see that ... not too far up from PHX ...

"More than 1 or 2" 4x4 roads that go higher ...

 

Nothing like a good night run in the dunes. Love that place.
