I found one off a 2020 with 15K miles, will that work or do I have to do anything besides maybe put it in relearn mode or some such?

Ok, here's the new (to me) 2020 tranny with 15K miles on it. It's shiny, must not have have ever been off the pavement. We should change that :)

Hope to have it swapped in the next couple days.

The torque converter slides right out smoothly on this one. On the old one it's hard to slide in and out, so something must be going on with the oil pump or something not nice.

I plan to try to see if my Autel scanner has a relearn function for this unit. The interchange supposedly said it will fit and work. I sure hope so. Anything else I should watch out for?

Seriously! OP started this thread to inspire people to wrench on their own trucks but after following this, next time I need an oil change I’m just gonna burn it down!!

I still get a chuckle out of the idea I've been trolling this whole time. Few people would stick with their truck this long, fewer would make it all up, along with pictures, for no apparent gain. I still think I want my truck back because I like it, and I haven't had one for a long time, that's pretty much it, along with doing the painful work of pointing out all of the mistakes that are possible to make so you don't make them too :)

I still can't figure out why having all the issues with the engine would have anything to do with damaging the transmission, but it appears the oil pump/bearing is somehow screwed up on the input to the transmission, you have to pull pretty hard to get the torque converter to slide out, so I guess that higher friction or resistance smokes the seal and then it leaks.

Pulled the old tranny yesterday, working on getting the new one in today :)

Maybe the truck lives this weekend? Not holding my breath. I think even the gas fill up I did last time is probably getting stale, I'll bet it smells like burning varnish for some miles.

Not likely. Your fuel system is closed loop. No evaporation can occur. That gas is good for 18 months.

    IT'S ALIIIIIIIVE!

    taco.jpg

After we drove it and then tightened the loose lug nuts :)

Job (as someone mentioned) had more patience and problems than me, and my wife never said curse God and die, so that's a plus.

I don't want to hear anyone else whining about having a difficult project that takes a long time, this was the mother of all suck. But here is almost EVERYTHING you're likely to encounter on a 3.5 engine motor swap, and how to fix it. Thanks so much community, high points to @Vlady couldn't have done it without you all, great community.

Even with all the pain (and over 8 months and 913 forum replies), and paying our local mechanic friend (good friend), I estimate I saved around $11,000 over having the dealer do it. Yes, it would've been faster (because I didn't have this thread), but I think I'll get another 10 years out of this truck now. If I invested the $11,000 saved, it would be worth approximately $23,747.90 in ten years at an 8% interest rate, compounded annually. That's how much the dealers are screwing people EVERY DAY who don't wrench on their own vehicles. Work on your own stuff for smaller things and I think you'd be astonished how quickly it'd add up. That's ignoring the interest most people would pay on the credit card they'd have to put a $16,000 motor swap on. If you make only the minimum payments on a $16,000 credit card balance with a 20% interest rate (had to pick a number), it would take you about 872 months (or approximately 73 years) to pay it off. Over that period, you would end up spending approximately $91,211.06 in total. That's a new Tacoma and a bunch more. That's how bad dealers are willing to screw you. Dealer service waiting rooms have nice carpet because they're screwing everyone.

Am I annoyed at the dealer? Sure, but I think this was a better way, and that's pretty satisfying. It may not be your path, but it's hopefully useful, and hopefully a good investment into the world for others to benefit, and that feels pretty good. Oh, and if you're ever in Oregon, DM me and I might hint about which dealers...

This has been one heck of a job, much admiration for your patience, most folks would have burned the truck 10X.:bowdown:
