I thought about that but then, if that's the case, they should have just built a better bump stop

I did by and install the Icon plates.. I just don’t want to deal with the chance of failure until I get aftermarket shocks. But I have to say I’m surprised there hasn’t been more failures. I know it’s a small percentage that actually go off road but still if it was a design flaw there would be far more. I’m leaning towards defective parts, and a small number of them.

Looks like a pressure cooker that blew its pop off valve. I can definitely see why that would fail.

I hit large speed bumps/humps all the time at 30 mph on Bilstein 6100's with plain-jane 3rd-gen top hats. So I guess I don't belong in this forum.

Yes you can remove it but if there are any wear marks, paint scratched off etc the stealership will blame you saying you modified or tampered with it

The dealers don’t get paid much at all to do warranty work from Toyota hence they’ll find any little bullshit reason to deny it

So according to the poll. One here?
That’s unfortunate for the person who had the problem but hardly wide spread.

Seems like more hype than substance.

However, if Toyota made actual top hats in 2024 and produced them in Guanajuato, based on Gen4 owner feedback here, I’d have to seriously consider purchasing a truckers cap from somewhere else instead.

Yeah so far it doesn't seem to be very common. I bet its common enough for toyota to change it soon though.

    and us...

But again... the BAD always gets the most attention, and I'm guilty of that as well, there are also a couple other trucks that we've seen in our shop and a couple people that have posted here as well, just not on this thread I think...

This is a non issue for the vast majority of owners.

YouTube “content” is rarely worth watching.

The only thing that gives me pause about any aftermarket solution to this is discovering some other weak link in the suspension.

I certainly don't want a trip ending prolapse of my front shock but would be a lot more irritated to find out I did some sort of extraordinarily expensive "warranty denied!" Damage that was attributed not to the design defect or the casting defect, but my aftermarket remedy.

What on earth would cause a warranty claim, much less a denied warranty claim for stronger shock support?

Y’all are getting nervous for no reason.

I'm wondering if it's mostly offroads, and the valving is too soft on some shocks. Take it offroad or similar situation and the bump stop fails and punctures the top hat.

Not changing the design that has worked in the past would have been the best recourse. The parts are being used on similar Toyota trucks.

been explained many times that its not the bump stop thats failing or thats even an issue at all. icons video explains it the best. the trd offroad shock has an internal bump zone where compression valving is much stiffer during the last couple inches of travel. the top hat cant handle the force of the shock shaft itself being forced upwards in the bump zone. where the bump stop hits is actually below the piece thats failing

That doesn't make any sense. If your coilover is going to fail on the trail it really doesn't matter what part is going to fail, you're gonna need a new one.

I haven't got around to watching the video. I doubt if it's the worse design and it could be a part failure and not Toyota's design. Being that this truck is still in it's 1st model year going back to an external bump stop would be Toyota's best direction, it works and Toyota makes the parts.

Especially since this newer frame design is supposed to be "stronger".

*Amazing* how quickly a company which offers offroad mods for vehicles can "break" their stock truck, and then immediately have a "solution."

Someone who's far, FAR more cynical than me might think that the "solution" already existed and all it needed was a video to pump up hysteria.
