Congrats and good job. Takes lots of patience and perseverance to go through all that for so long. It certainly went over the top when the new motor had its own fair share of issues to fix and I sure hope you got a fair price on it looking back at the trouble it was to deal with.

I hope this doesn’t happen to me but eventually you have to expect to do at least an engine swap or something, since nothing lasts forever. I sure hope mine goes a lot smoother, but I wouldn’t be scared to attempt the swap. Clearly getting a good used one is paramount to finishing the job quickly. It’s a good thing you have multiple vehicles because how long this thing was down, could have been an even bigger headache.

Glad to see this end positively. And maybe now more people will do their own oil changes.

and definitely a huge kudos to @Vlady, impressive helpful input was shared by him continuously for sure.

    Congrats!!
I think the hardest part was to convince you to pull the engine for 2nd time.
Also, it was a good insight on common trouble codes you pulled during the process.
The thread should be a sticky for sure.

To sum things up, the main issue was the crank shaft reluctor wheel?

Seemingly that and wiring issues in the harness that came on the used motor. And probably more.

Someone butchered the reluctor wheel. The other were trying to "fix" by playing with CPS wiring and the sensor.

Running a few days now with zero issues, have to get used to not driving a diesel again, hoping to refill gas tank with gas from this year, I imagine that will help.

The guy I got the engine from had it in and out a couple times before the Toyota guy let him know he needed a non-vacuum motor, this one was a vacuum. So they tried to make it a non-vacuum motor by plugging the hole, which didn't work. I don't think they ever knew the crank reluctor was off, and I also don't know how they got it off by one, since there's an alignment pin. Then they screwed with the timing components to try to make it work, and one bank was off by a tooth. Also, the hollow bolt thing in the end of the cam sprocket controls advance, and it didn't match the solenoid on the outside of the engine. All that means it could've never run right, but it did sorta run. I think the guy that had it played with it for awhile and got tired of it.

Interestingly, we didn't so anything to the tranny besides bolt it up and add fluid, the computer didn't complain.

I still have no idea why the old torque converter was so hard to slide, suggesting the tranny oil pump bearing had issues, but I don't know why. The old tranny shifted fine, just leaked. New one only has 15K on it though, so should have some life left in it. New motor had around 115K, so I hope to get 150K or more out of the truck, drive it until the wheels fall off or get hit by some guy texting, that's how most wrecks happen these days.

Dog: Sheepadoodle. And part freak. She runs a minimum of 1.5 miles per day on our driveway next to the taco, weekends she'll do 10+ miles beside truck doing 15-20mph. She's a good girl, with me 90% of the time :)

Side rant: I get annoyed at those car build shows where they restore a classic Mustang from the ground with a new crate motor up in a 20 minute show and they're doing paint and then selling it for $75K. That's rubbish. The reality is lots of nights in the garage sweating it out. End of rant.

Do you think you might damaged it while removing the engine and fixing the transmission connectors multiple times?
    SM does warn about it..

Hmmm..... In the end I wonder if @Buttskevin21 fully disclosed to you all the potential issues the used engine had due to his re-working of the Vacuum engine? He seemed to coincidently disappear from this site after that.

I don't blame the engine seller, after all I got it for 1k, so I really can't complain, and also don't know who all worked on it. He probably doesn't know what all they did. He just realized he didn't get a non-vacuum engine.

I think it's likely the transmission was damaged somewhere along the way, but it still had 177K miles, so getting one with 15K seemed like a good idea regardless.

Love the doggies, we should be the people they think we are :)

Yeah, I don’t think he really worked on it himself
Bought it used, someone had done something, then Toyota dealership worked on it and then it went to you
If he knew about the issue and disclosed it it would have still been worth $1000, so no real reason for him to hide it
