Gas-powered vehicles newer than 1975 (and diesel newer than 1996) are worthless in California if they won’t pass smog because they can’t be registered.

Smog is not required in all parts of CA

I know this; San Bernardino is one of those places, but my favorite part of California requires smog. I was born in Santa Clara County (NorCal) and spent just over the first year of my life there, then we lived in PA for six years while my dad was stationed here, and we moved back to Santa Clara when my dad was stationed back. All parts of California that I’ve been to require smog testing. My dad legally circumvented the system when we lived there from 1996 to 1998. As active duty military, he wasn’t required to register his cars there or get a California driver’s license. My mom did have to get a CA license, but my dad kept our 1990 Toyota Camry and our 1996 Nissan Pathfinder titled and registered in PA.

If I had to live in California, I would opt for San Bernardino or somewhere inland. The problem is that those places are really hot. It seems like the Bay Area, LA, and San Diego are the only places that really require smog testing; I was shocked when I found out that San Bernardino didn’t require it!

There’s this Beagle named Chester who I first met at the Truck Nationals in 2021; I skipped the Truck Nationals in 2022 in favor of going to California for a family reunion, and went back in 2023. Chester and his owner were in attendance in 2023, and Chester recognized me and came up to me; I paid Chester a visit again at the 2024 Truck Nationals…

This adorable dog approached my friend Gwyn’s daughter in the parking lot at her work in Philly yesterday, and she took him home. They took him to the vet and found that he did not have a chip. He has clearly been abused and neglected, but he is very friendly. Gwyn cannot afford to keep him because she already has two dogs, a tortoise, and numerous cats; I have already contacted a friend of mine who is big in the rescue community.

I would keep him, but I also have a dog and can’t afford another. My girlfriend has a cat and can’t afford another pet. We want to make sure that he goes to a no-kill organization and ultimately gets adopted.

I am likely not going to help out coworkers by giving them rides, even if they compensate me, after what happened yesterday…

Amanda’s shift starts an hour before mine (she’s 11am and I’m 12pm), so I always drop her off. Ironically, this story involves a pair of shoes left in a car, and I almost drove off with Amanda’s non-slip sneakers in the bed.

Amanda grabbed her shoes, and right after I went to park, one of our coworkers approached her and asked if I would drive her to Walmart to get a new pair of shoes in exchange for twenty bucks. Her mom was borrowing her car, she’d gotten a ride with her boyfriend, and her boyfriend had driven off before she realized her shoes were km his car.

I agreed to drive her to Walmart, and I waited in the truck while she went in to buy the shoes. She came out relatively quickly, and complained about how long the line at the checkout was, but I thought nothing of it. She paid me via CashApp before we left the parking lot, and I got her back to the nursing home about half an hour before my shift started.

I thought nothing of this excursion until Amanda told me in the truck night after work that our coworker admitted to her that she had stolen the shoes! She apparently felt guilty and told Amanda. Her excuse for shoplifting was that she didn’t feel like waiting in line, even though she had enough money both to buy the shoes and pay me for driving her to Walmart!

I feel guilty, so I will be using the twenty bucks to buy coffee at that same Walmart. My dad and a trusted friend have told me that since I didn’t witness it and didn’t learn about it until hours after it happened, I should just keep my mouth shut. This was my plan to begin with and they backed it up.

FYI, this is the same Walmart that has such a big shoplifting problem that condoms and lube are locked up!

You were the Wheel-Man and didn't even realize it, lol. Sucks that it happened, good on you to think twice about any more rides.

I wouldn’t go back to that wal-mart for a while.
And that woman would never ask me for anything again.
Not after she hears what I have to say to her.

I am all for taking responsibility for my own actions.
If I do the crime, it’s on me.

If you do it…..it’s on you.
    Don’t drag me into it.

So, your truck was involved and you were driving.
    Guilty until proven innocent.

I didn’t steal anything from wal-mart and I was detained.

I’m not a snitch. But that woman (if that’s what you want to call her). Would NEVER ask me for anything again. She’d best of never speaking to me again.

If I ever go down for a crime, it’s going to be big.
    Really big and worth it.

I’m not going to for a pair of tennis shoes. Hell nahh…..
And I’m damn sure not going down because of some one else.

Donate the $20 to charity if you feel guilty. Don’t go back to that Walmart to make amends.

Decent chance your plate was logged by loss prevention as an “accessory” to the crime. But for a $20 item, highly unlikely they come after you. Would not worry about it.

Just don’t steal shit from Walmart in the future or be a wheelman and you’ll be fine.
