yeah. the definition has changed. We Tent. air mattress and pillows, but in a tent. Cook our food over a fire I tend all weekend. We bring either a canoe OR bikes, but not both.

We really enjoy it. We always talk about what we'd want if we got a camper...but it never goes past the convo stage.

so after years of camping on the ground i hate it! thats why i loved my rtt setup so much! it was still a tent and simple but off the damn ground haha. i have been looking at the larger tents you can stand in thou but the gf isnt a big camper unless its in well a small camper lol she wants ac and a bathroom sooo prob what we will get one day.

Well, I get that, sorta...but I want to be able to drive away from my camp. We go to visit an area. If my truck is my tent I'm either setting up several times or I'm not mobile. Neither is acceptable to me. Not sure whats so hard about sleeping on an air mattress on the ground. I've been doing for more than 1/2 a century. Honestly, aside from ACTUAL overlanding (backcountry, with daily relocating) I don't understand the RTT. Plus you can't carry a canoe with a RTT.

Depends what kind of sites you're headed to I suppose. Most of our camp / 4x4 trips offer little suitable ground for a tent, most that pack one end up sleeping in the vehicle instead. I hear you on the packing up the RTT and it being tied to the vehicle, it's my biggest complaint with it. Short trips with just myself and the dog I've ended up just sleeping in the T4R, not worth the effort of a RTT.

As an RTT owner, this is the break point. If you're camping multiple days in the same spot, and moving using the vehicle, it does get a bit annoying. That said, to go from folded to sleeping is sub 2mins and pack-up is under 5 so it really isn't too bad. I have been known to just bring a tent if multi-day stationary camping.

In an area with nothing but sagebrush for miles, or tall grass, etc it is super nice to have a good place to sleep that doesn't involve packing up a wet/muddy/etc tent.

Right, that makes total sense. Probably not running off from the 'site' in those circumstances so it makes perfect sense. We often go to a hike in camping area, so you can't access by vehicle anyway, and it's minutes from the beach. So on those weekends the truck is our beach shuttle from the parking area while we're sleeping out in the woods. RTT simply can't serve. I would be all over one for traveling. I've looked at them, many are ridiculously well thought out. But I can buy another motorcycle for what a rack and tent set up will cost. So I have 4 motos, 2 bikes, the canoe, and the girl, and no RTT. :)

Well I'm sold. If I can back that end close to or in the water I've got prime patio space for my next round of glamping!

i mean so did i so i would have it on my little military trailer lol. when i go camping thou im staying where im at since im normally in the middle of nowhere for that night i also hate hiking! so not going anywhere lol
if im on a trip out of state i normally move on to another place the next night so setup and tear down has never bothered me to much...
however i would prefer it to be faster so i looked into hardshell tents so they are even faster setup and tear down.
for me ground camping i hate it! yes will i camp on the ground if i have to but man air mattress suck ass.. every single time ive slept on one its gotten a leak and i end up on the rocks... plus the tent poles are just annoying... or as one other stated i dont have to mess with a wet and muddy tent after it rains with a rtt. now a rtt does come with its own challenges becuase they are up high unless a lower bed rack setup.

also you can carry one lol people have done it but i also dont want one haha

awesome pics. looks like a fun time

My bigger gripe with my GFC is that it's limited by where the truck can go/park. Like your pic above, camped out on top of that boulder by the lake, would be pretty hard for me to achieve safely and without destroying nature, i think. but that is an awesome location.

I also love it because i can just pull up to the beach with lunch or a snack and have a nice comfortable spot to lay in and relax, with a view. helped by the fact the setup/takedown is so quick. I didn't do it as often when I had a clamshell RTT, that was more hassle.

but ultimately, it's a luxury and not at all necessary, especially for me. on the rare occasions I do tent camp, I don't even use a mattress or pad unless the ground is exceptionally rocky/bumpy. I could have bought at least 2 bikes with the cost lol. Guess it's a good thing I bought before I got into motorcycles

That looks like fun out there. I'll have to watch the vids a bit later tonight
Ground tent ftw. I've had 2 RTTs and prefer the simplicity of the ground tent.
Yeah I think the packing up to go drive somewhere got me somewhat. Even a hardshell rtt still has that issue with packing up the ladder. But I did think it was superior for the ease of setup/teardown, it was a smaller tent though.
