A few weeks ago I noticed that the driver-side Toytec spring was broken.

I was surprised because the springs are only 3 years old, and have less than 40,000 miles on them, and I've never had a coil spring break on any vehicle I've ever owned.

I contacted Toytec and was told that they were out of warranty but they "would help me out".

They didn't help me out... (the manager never returned and of my emails or calls after the first communication).

So I decided to order some Bilstein 6112's from another company which I'm still waiting on.

    Fast forward to today...

Now the passenger coil has also broken!

I'm curious if any others have experienced similar issues with these springs. Is this to be expected? Are these total junk?

Would like to hear anyone's thoughts.

Guess what I'm not going to buy. Good Luck. I hope they step up. But it doesn't look like it. Please post how the 6112's do as I am looking at them too.

The same shit everyone else has.
    Which springs are they?

I have the 1.6” 620# springs on my truck and haven’t had an issue in over 100k miles.

These are the exact ones I have as well…

Is there’re any salt where you live? It seems like that may be the determining factor.

It just doesn’t seem like it would be that difficult to manufacture them out of a material that is resistant to corrosion.

Pittsburgh. There’s salt on the road 6 months of the year.

    Wild...

Maybe just a bad lot? Obviously, it's an issue with some of the springs and it is annoying when a company won't step up as it definitely loses money for them in the long run.

Yikes, I have 44k miles/7 years of driving on mine and they still look brand new.

Interesting—seems like they just have used a different batch of steel for these ones that are crumbling…

I believe they are all made by Eibach?

Initially I didn’t notice any clunks or noises during normal driving. I did notice it with the window down over speed bumps after I realized it was broken.

Mine just broke on the top the same way... 3 years old, maybe 25k miles, still look new. Heard it pop while I was changing oil in the garage. Ridiculous

My Driverside broke in two places and the very top turn. These are 2018s so 6 years old. The coating has uniformly lost adhesion and the entire spring corroded both sides.

The toytec rears are still ok and coated black. The manufacturer of these fronts must have had either bad steel or bad heat treating and poor coating adhesion.

Look at the rest of the components around the spring in my picture. All same age, same milage, same salt exposure in NH.

These coils have mfg defects that turn up after warranty. These were driven on the street in my wife's 4runner daily, not abused.

I'd stick to big name brand coils with proven durability and coatings.

The fatigue resistance of steel corroded in "sea water" is horrible. Ask the US Navy. The torsion resistance of the spring wire is concentrated on the surface - and all it takes to get a crack initiation is a deep pit.

These springs needed to be treated with a chemical corrosion resistant material - not paint or vinyl. There are also steel chemistries that will corrode - but only deep enough to form a hard, resisting layer.

One just has to look at the OEM coil springs to see the anticorrosion coating in action. I could still easily see the paint marks on my oem coils 17 years later and they had almost no rust on them.

yeh sorry to say so but over the years I've come to wince every time I hear the maker name "Toytech"

It has for quite some time been basically a term of derision

Had mine installed in 2014 (10 years ago) and no issues. Still look brand new even. Had a set on my last truck as well and no issues. It seems like the issue (given the pictures posted) is how they deal with rust.
