My girlfriend Katie has a Jeep, and we like it.

    I threw on a 2.5" lift and 31" BFG's.

It does lack some power. Nothing compared to the 4.0 in the Tacomas.

But it has been reliable, and lots of fun.

The CJ5's had a much shorter wheel base, and they were way lighter.

I've had Jeeps and Toys for decades, so I will chime in. If you are really interested in off roading, skip the four door; it's way too big and heavy. Might as well get a Hummer if you want to go super sized.

Better, for a fraction of the cost of new or used wrangler, find a used Cherokee. It's light, small, agile, comfortable, inexpensive to mod, and, most importantly it has a SFA. The 4.0 is a proven motor and can easily run over 200K; have around 250K on the same engine. If you know how to drive, search for the five speed manual tranny particulary if you intend this as a commuter; a blast to drive with a slick Hurst shifter upgrade to the Toy AX15 tranny. And, the five speed model is way quicker than my Taco and consistently gets significantly better fuel economy -- yes, don't forget four dollar/gallon fuel will be arriving again in the future. Just my 02 cents worth.

Just to throw it out there. The Jeep Rubicon was voted the Worst SUV made in 2008. With the FJ a close second.

I read about it in Car and Driver Mag. So take it with a grain of salt, they test for day to day pavement driving.

    For a daily driver.....Naaaaa. I wouldn't pay that much for a Wrangler.

If you wanna build a rock crawler - buy an older TJ or even a YJ with the 4.0L engine, AX15 tranny, and get rid of the D35/D30.

Stick on hood scoop from Autozone.
    Wranglers shouldn't have four doors.

An outa-the-box Rubicon (4:1 T-Case, short shaft, electric lockers, etc) would crush any 4runner stocker that I have ever seen.
Without radical mods, the 4runner would would be completely out-classed on the trail.
