Previous owner of my truck decided to cut into the bed rails caps (pictured) to expose screw holes in the side of the bed  . Figured they’re used to attach a bed rack of some sort, but most that I’ve found online attach to the rails directly. Any idea what they could have had attached? Thoughts on how I could repurpose them? Screw holes are roughly 2 inches apart, 4 sets of holes exposed, with two more hidden under the caps towards the middle of the bed.

Those are for the factory tonneau cover. There are latch points that bolt on there.

What he said. I have no idea what toyota was thinking when offering that tonneau cover as a factory option...
Your pictures aren't showing for me BTW...

I am sure you can trade those out to a person on this forum that bought or traded for a factory tonneau and did not trade the rail caps. They are in demand from the right person.

Incorrect if you look at the photo the cut was made into the composite bed . The oem cover has the cut on the plastic cap .

Regardless if the composite bed has been cut standard bed rail caps will cover the cut outs. IMO I would buy new caps install them and forget about trying to repurpose the bolt holes.

Appreciate all the replies! Makes sense if it was for a Toyota accessory. I cleaned up the original cuts to the covers with a Dremel since the previous owner appears to have only had access to a box cutter… These dang things aren’t cheap to replace either (~$130 per side) so may end up searching the junk yards first.

    suspect '16 - '23 will all fit.

Ended up giving something else a try… Purchased some rope loops from Lowe’s that fit perfectly. Would only use them as a secondary strap point or for small miscellaneous items, but saves me a trip to the junk yard or shellin out money to the dealership (for now).

Good job. I'd spray some flat black in there.

I wonder if one of those rope loops will fit in the cross brace that has two threaded holes right below the rear window?

When I initially looked into solutions for this I actually just kept seeing posts of exactly what you’re describing. Was able to dig up the post I saw:

That’s for your flag pole mount. :canada:

Well it could be I guess… After I sold my Tonneau and didn’t need those holes for its mount anymore, I used it for an antenna mount until I put a shell on the truck. Now it helps anchor my platform and pull out drawer setup.

I like the idea of making it another anchor point also.
