    Non AI summary:

Toyota-loving dealership tech guy who has a 4Runner makes a video where he's shocked at how soon this automatic transmission completely failed on a 4th gen tacoma with about 500 miles on it. He said Toyota was very good about getting full bolt on transmission sent and is generally positive about the process Toyota uses for replacements, but was a bit leery about the future of this platform given he's never seen a Toyota in the shop with such low miles for something so major. He still would buy a Toyota in the future because he thinks highly of the warranty process with them.

He didn't know much of the backstory, only was there to do the swap on it. Truck wouldn't go in reverse, only forward. Got a new tranny and new torque converter in it. The failed transmission went straight back to Toyota for post mortem.

This was the only one he had seen in person.

For all the issues the 3rd gen transmission programming had, I am not aware of many actual failures; certainly not within the first year of ownership. Seems like Toyota has another problem here. Maybe not a Tundra-esque problem, but a problem nonetheless.

The manual had a few issues on release, we saw one at our dealer, its growing pains as usual.

Best to wait another year or three before buying one.

not gonna watch the video, but the other failed tranny thread had this guy beat by 158 miles, so who holds the "world record" now? :annoyed:

Chief engineer Sheldon brown said they caught this problem very early on and small amount of trucks were affected. Good to know it won’t be a problem moving forward but what Toyota hasn’t done is tell the folks like myself who own a early(March 15th) build that don’t drive much if we’ll have a failure. It would be nice for them to issue a statement about this

Does the owner now trade this truck in? The truck should be better than new, with a new transmission. People buy and trade fairly new Tacomas all the time, I always wonder why somone got rid of the vehicle when they are being sold used.

I haven't seen one issue reported on a hybrid yet. Maybe people haven't put any miles on them. The hybrid motor sits between the engine and transmission. The truck in the video had a transmission failure, seems like a bigger issue when that happens onba hybrid truck.

Isn't there a Pro with a transmission failure?

The video shows the trans mounts to the engine off center. Does the hybrid mount the same way? Did not look like much room. The trans gets pushed further back to get the hybrid motor in there.

It's not only the hybrid battery eating into cabin space on GAF trucks it's also the room needed on hybrids.

Wouldn't be nice to know what the problem is and how Toyota has corrected it?

Both gas and hybrid have had few failures. It’s been resolved

Well we know how they fixed it, it was the supplier that left debris inside the transmission and torque converter

Have to wonder if this was the reason for one of those earlier QC holds? Seems like a rare occurrence, but important enough to isolate the effected trucks and not sell them.

I’m sure it absolutely was. My biggest concern is mines March build and just left wondering if it will be okay or not

Supplier debri seems like a Toyota exclusive issue. Are other manufactures having a supplier debri problem?

Almost 2700 miles so far. Hasn't done the hard shift in a while, so I don't know. I split up driving with another vehicle so miles don't accumulate that fast.
