    Amanda’s housemate had owned the Silverado for about a decade at the time it was taken; I don’t think it’s even possible to get a ten year loan on a vehicle, at least not a used one. It sounds like he borrowed money from one of those title loan places, which in my opinion aren’t much better than going to a loan shark…

    I believe he paid off the bank loan and then took out a high-interest loan against the truck after it was paid off. Like I said, those title loan places aren’t much better than loan sharks…

    I don't know why I'm remembering this now, but I am...

    It was one of the only times I've ever seen my dad get genuinely angry at somebody. From July 2000 to either June or July of 2002, my dad was stationed at NAS whidbey Island. We lived in Oak Harbor, Washington. My parents found it easier to rent a house instead of buying one, and they rented one from one of my dad's colleagues in the Navy, who had just been transferred to Maine. The house was a beautiful 3-bedroom (4 if you count the study/den that had a closet), 2.5-bathroom rancher with a 3-car garage that had been built in 1988. It was somewhere in the range of 2,200-2,300 square feet, and it had a crawlspace (I'm only aware of one house on Whidbey Island that had a basement). The house isn't important...

    We've lived in a lot of places, but I swear that we got more door-to-door salespeople in Oak Harbor than anywhere else. Coming in at a close second was when we lived in Northern Virginia from 2002 to 2005.

    The most common doorknockers in Oak Harbor were people from the Kirby vacuum cleaner company selling this carpet cleaner stuff, and Jehovah's Witnesses. The modus operandi of the Kirby people was that they would knock on your door and say that they were trying to sell this cleaner, and that they had to meet a quote in order to win a trip to Cancun. I forget whether you had to let them into your house to demonstrate the product in order to get a discount, or if you had to let them in to buy the product period. Either way, this is where my parents politely declined. Most of them thanked us for our time and went on their way.

    One time, this foreign guy (either Indian or Hispanic from what I could tell) came by selling Kirby cleaner; I was in the family room watching TV, and my dad answered the door. He was really pushy, and if I'm remembering correctly, he actually had the balls to step through the front door. My dad flipped out and ordered him "out of his house", and thus off the property. He left more or less without incident, but my dad was PISSED.

    Our house had a big picture window in the front that gave an excellent view of the entire front yard, and the door also had a peephole. The Kirby salespeople weren't particularly easy to spot, but the Jehovah's Witnesses could be spotted a mile away, so we just ignored them. The solicitation got so bad that I made a sign that basically said "Unless you are selling Girl Scout Cookies, we are not interested", and my parents let me put it on the front door. It worked! We generally bought Girl Scout cookies from my cousins who lived here in PA and had them shipped, but my parents were also happy to support the local troop.

    I see Jehovah's Witnesses set up on the sidewalk outside of a shopping center near Amanda's house all the time, because they aren't allowed to do this in the shopping center, but the sidewalk is considered public property. They are mostly ignored from what I can tell. I am 99% sure that I haven't had a Jehovah's Witness come to my door in almost two decades, and I believe the last one was at our house in Doylestown back in 2005-2007...

    When my parents bought the townhouse in Furlong back in 2007 (brand new house), the salespeople were trying to sell stuff like window treatments. Ground was broken on that development in 2003 or 2004, my parents bought their house in 2007, and Toll Brothers didn't finish the neighborhood until 2010. The window treatment people relentlessly targeted the neighborhood because it was clearly brand new. In 2007-2008, I lost count of how many of these people knocked on our door. It was also the same old song and dance. They'd ask if the lady of the house was home, which was rather annoying. There was at least one gay male couple living on our street, as well as a single guy, and our neighbor who had just divorced his wife and joint custody of his three kids. My parents got their blinds from a reputable source, and choosing them was a joint decision as a couple.

    We've lived in our current house since March 2016, and the door-to-door salespeople were nowhere near as rampant, though recently we got a visit from a woman representing an exterminator. Cleaning ladies and pet sitting services leave business cards under our door handle and in our mailbox all the time. During election years, the political canvassers are out in force. One of the few good things about neighborhoods with HOAs like the one I live in, is that the HOA tends to be very strict about solicitors. Boroughs and townships also require solicitors and "peddlers" to purchase permits, and this dissuades them from what I can tell.

    I don't think we've had JWs here, but sometimes I see the Mormons doing drive bys (bike bys?, peddle meddling?, we can workshop this more)

    Anybody who regularly follows my thread will remember the group home fiasco, where someone rented out their single-family home in the neighborhood where @Gwyns04 and @Stitchgirl90 both live, and allowed it to be used as a group home. This in itself isn't a huge deal, but there were at least two people with mental problems living there. One of them was a black woman who was probably in her 30s or 40s, likely plucked out of Philly, who got the cops called on her numerous times because she would ask residents of the neighborhood (including kids) for money.

    Even though the township has an ordinance in place that makes what she was doing illegal, with signs clearly posted in my girlfriend's neighborhood, there was really not much the police could do since she wasn't really causing much trouble at first. She actually showed up before Amanda moved in if I'm remembering correctly, and showed up at Gwyn's house asking for money while Amanda and I were in the summer or 2023.

    On New Year's Day this year, I was driving to get Amanda, and this woman almost got herself run over by yours truly because she decided to run out into the street as I pulled into the neighborhood and attempt to hitchhike. At least I think she wanted a ride, but she wouldn't have gotten a ride based purely on the fact that she is known to relieve herself in her pants and walk around smelling of piss.

    Another time earlier this year, I was dismantling a scrap air-conditioner in the bed of my truck in Gwyn's front yard, she asked me for money; I politely said that I did not and she walked away without incident.

    Sometime in the late spring, the police got reports that she was becoming very aggressive when people refused to give her money, and anyone who encountered her was instructed to call the cops immediately. She was finally removed from the group home sometime prior to June 2024; I have no idea if the residence is still being utilized as a group home.

    We've never gotten any religious doorknockers at our current house, but Washington seemed to be full of them. My parents and I went to a nondenominational chapel on the Navy base when we lived in Oak Harbor...

    Is Kirby those vacuum cleaner salespeople? Had one once try to force his way into my house, blocked him and told him he was not welcome here.

    Yes, but while it was the same company, they were selling spray foam cleaner and not actual vacuums. Was this at your current house or another house?

    Did he actually have a vacuum? If not, it sounds like you got one of the same people that we were getting. What year was this in? We lived in Oak Harbor from 2000 to 2002, and I believe my dad flipped out on the Kirby guy in late 2001...

    BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
    Dude tailgating me up to a red light. I pull over and let him around to wait first ( it’s a looong red light). I see he has all kinds of Jesus saves stickers and shit all over his (Toyota Corolla, actually). I pull next to him to turn left just before the light turns green. He looks over at me and I smile and wave and say “I’m going the other way!”

    Tonight, on the way home from dropping off Amanda, a guy in a C5 Corvette decided he wanted to be first on a road that goes from two lanes to one. He somewhat illegally passed me with inches to spare and cut me off. My truck has aftermarket foglights that can be turned on at the same time as the high-beams; I already had the foglights on, so I turned on the high-beams. He retaliated by slamming on his brakes with such force that I smelled his tires.

    You’re in a relatively small sports car and I’m in a truck. Clearly you don’t know how gravity works! o_O

    He then proceeded to aggressively tailgate the vehicle in front of him…

    @shakerhood
    @Steves104x4

    My foglights are very bright, and sometimes people mistake them for high-beams. One time I was less than mile from home, and someone in a Range Rover repeatedly flashed their brights at me because they thought mine were on. The constant flashing really pissed me off, I finally lost my temper, and I flipped them off as we passed each other; I can’t believe people are stupid enough to think my foglights are high-beams…
