FYI - as a bench mark .....with the external cooler pinned ..... my experience ....

When camping, I tow a pop-up tent trailer. All our camping gear and wife and I, can't weigh more than 2000 or 2250 lbs.
There are some good long uphill pulls 1) on I-17 north out of Phoenix to Bumblebee, ( then down into Verde Valley) from 2) Verde Valley on I-17 north uphill to near McGuireville Rest Stop.
(Driving South on I-17 south of Verde Valley is a real kick ! The sign says its a 6% grade uphill. I don't believe that - when you're driving it, you think its gotta be MORE !!)

    Then to Flagstaff.
There, flat on I-40, west to Williams - then, North on HW 64 to Grand Canyon.
Total trip of about 340 miles.
I don't ever remember seeing anything above 185F for the Trans Temps pulling uphill, passing big rigs easily - down-shifting into 4 or 3. I consider my driving attitude as slightly less than 'assertive', no way wimpy, and no way 'aggressive'.

I like to stay driving at 65 mph - tent trailer manual says so.

In town, towing on these trips, I'm in Select 3 or 4. (Manual says to use Select when towing) When on the flat freeway driving, I can go into Select 5. There, the engine runs at about 2000 rpm, at 65 mph. I get 19 mpg. When I need to, I shift into S4 and such .....

    Desert temps, say about 80F-90F.
When in the Flag, Williams, Grand C, you're at 6000 to 6800 feet above sea level. Temps decrease about 3F every 1000 feet. So its 10 degrees less, cooler.

(Another hairy pull is west on I-8, west of Ocotillo, CA and uphill to Jacumba, CA. I don't even remember seeing a sign that tells the grade .... brrrrrrrrr)

I try to stay out of any extremes, hot or cold, with good margins of safety for the Taco.

@Tacogent did my trip last Wednesday. Ambient temps in the 80's and pulling about 1200lbs of ATV and trailer plus another 600 lbs between an extra passenger, a big dog, and all our gear for the weekend trip. Trans pan temps never went over 195* even up the steepest grades. Of course if the converter unlocked the converter fluid temps would climb to around 210* but it would never stay unlocked long enough to get higher. I'd run S4 on most of the hills which would put me right at 3000 rpm and since the intake spacer drops the peak torque from 4000 rpm to 3000 rpm it really worked out nicely. I also noticed the truck was more likely to stay in 5th on small hills than before.

Not to derail on the trans temp PIDs, but for those of you in a 21’ or newer, what are you using for the trans gear status? My OBD Fusion w/ Toyota pack for 2021 does not have the status of the shift selection. The Shift Status I have selected only shows 0 or 1. Any ideas or will I need to manually enter a PID for this to show what gear I’m in?

    ETA:
For those interested and using the 2021 pack, Shift Status is correct for current gear. I needed to delete and re-do the gauge for it to function.

Also at the risk of derailing things (hopefully not) is there an engine oil temp sensor that we can put in a PID for? Just adding that gauge didn't get any reading.

Reading the huge thread on OBD Fusion, there is not a sensor that we can read through obd for oil temps. Most likely have to use Techstream or something similar.

That's kind of what I figured. Thank you.

This may not be exactly helpful, but I'm using OBDLink on my iPhone and it has a PID for engine oil temp.

That is a calculated value. There is no sensor for engine oil temperature. There is a low oil level sensor, and an on/off pressure sensor that is only useful for announcing with a red light that your engine is now toast.....

NICE ! Seems like your system is working out!
    1) Did you PINN T-Stat or not for those temps?
    2) What is your cooler and 3)are you in-line/series with the radiator/trans/ oil cooler?
    4) Will you PIN the T-Stat at some time, just for curiosity sake? I'd be interested in the outcome !

    Items;
    1) I use the S (Select) because the Toy manual say to when towing.
    2) In town, when towing, I start out in S3 and then go to S4.
    3) On the freeway and state Highways, I get into S5 a lot and get up to 65mph with rpm about 2000. Trailer recommends that speed. Get about 19mpg towing.
4)When climbing in/up the hills, I do go into S3 and S4 for passing and good uphill climbs.
    5) I do this shift(ing) until I feel that a) the engine is NOT lugging and b) when I think the engine is getting GOOD Power. (The truck is telling me "THIS IS WHERE I WANT TO BE!). For me it is a "feel thing".
5a) I've usually seem to get within my target temps - below 180* for me.
    6) Driving habits play into our comfort zones here. I've driven/drive VW's - Super Beetles my whole adult life. 1200 to 1600 CC engines. I can tell very easily when an engines are straining. I still have a daily driver - a 1971 VW SB - Stock except for a tuned extractor. Shifting in a VW is very much a "feel thing".

CONGRATS ! Seems like you got system working for you !!

( Got a pic of your dog you'd like to share?)

I didn't pin the stat or add an auxiliary cooler but I do have a Derale in the basement I'd like to install for when I pull something heavier like my boat. I can't say I won't pin the cooler but can't promise I will. LOL! I put it in ECT power and S mode and manually shift as conditions dictate. When I'm in S5 and see a hill coming I think will require a downshift, I'll drop it down a gear before hitting it rather than force the trans to shift down under a heavy load as I know that's worse for it. If a long downhill is coming I'll let it shift 6th. I am running 75 mph most of the time when doing the trip upstate as that's what keeps up with traffic and keeps the motor in the power in 4th climbing hills. Oh, and here's two of the three dogs. 20230115_124414~2.jpg
