A Victory 4x4 hood mount will likely work better. There is no ground plane back there where he is mounting the antenna.

Not correct about the ground plane. The bed, bonded to the frame, is an excellent ground plane. As long as the antenna is mounted at the top level of the bed, which is how this antenna is mounted. This is why it’s important to grind off the powder coating on the mount, so that it makes a good electrical contact with the bed/frame. By the way, the other radio, the FTM-400XDR, uses a Victory mount antenna on the hood. And my first contact with the bed mounted antenna was from Minneapolis, minnesota to Havana, Cuba. Yes, I’d say it’s working pretty well.
