I live in Canada :( but in Alberta we don't salt our roads... just gravel... we basically exchange rust for windshields every oil change.

This is interesting though. I'm at 200'000kms and issues i've had are my low ball joints and now left rear axle bearing. I can almost surely trace it to the frost heave I murdered at 120kph last winter or the deer I hit. Otherwise I replaced my A/C compressor because it was starting to stick this spring.

I'm sorry you're suffering such a bad fate with your truck OP.

I liked my 93 (with the 3.0 V6) always reliable and never let me down but I don't wish to daily drive one again. Very much like my 3rd gen and expect atleast another 200'000kms

Toyota makes a good product. I'm an old-fart who lived through the 60-s/70-s/80-s where 100,000 miles on a vehicle
was unheard of. If you bought a used car with 35,000 miles on it you were skating on very thin ice and mentally prepared
to shell out repairs for the next 15,000 miles because at 50,000 miles the thing would be shot to hell.

So to me getting 100,000 miles out of any vehicle means it has lived its best life.

Lots and lots of folks putting 200k on these trucks.... but not every Tacoma built ( 3rd gen anyway ) will hit 200k/300k.
I put 199,999 miles on my '92 pickup truck.... shoulda kept it but sold it for peanuts.

You got 100k out of it - you did ok....

Live in canada so 8 months summer 4 months winter do not abuse whatsoever....100k in 8 years keep it clean ...but it is a money pit....you pay 50k for a mid size truck and have to put more cash in just for it to function properley....

I feel as tough you may have a lemon (and I’m sorry to hear about your experience). I’ve got ~63K miles on my 2021, which I believe is a little over 100K Canadian miles. I haven’t spent a dime on maintenance other than the regular 5,000 mile service intervals. Never had a single issue.

Its first year of 3rd gen, 2016. First year always sucks of new gens.

The original 2nd gen 4.0 V6 was same way when it came out, so did Tundra V8 first years.

Sorry to hear but 2016-2017 tacomas have had a lot of issues. Burning oil is usually from 10k+ mile oil changes or crappy ring seating on break in. The ring seal wears faster with longer interval changes and I always do 5-7500k oil changes due to this. Missing on cylinder 1 is a known issue with direct injector there. Ever swapped the PS fluid or exercised the 4x4 actuator much since you never went off road?

When the engine came out was a perfect time to swap or service that the PS rack. They usually start having issues at the 10 year mark when seals dry out. Spraying them with seal conditioner helps.

Agree these are not the second gen as far as reliability go, but I think you just got unlucky with the early model blues. New Toyotas are losing their quality after the old execs left in 2019-2020.

You joined to talk about fog lights, high beams, and toneau cover when you bought the truck but you never posted about the oil buring, Missing spark, steering rack or the 4x4 engagement issues when you experienced them? Why now all of a sudden are you bringing these issues to light?

That is one reason. MSRP on my 01 LX470 was $65k. That's over $100k in today's money.

Toyota threw everything they had at the flagship models (LS400, LS430, LX470, 100 LC, 80 LC, GX). They received beefier suspension, robust engine/trans. More attention to details, interior nicer. Everything nicer and stronger.

I love Taco and 4runner, but they have always been the lower end models in Toyota's eyes. Hence the lower price vs higher end models.

Yeah let's dismiss the guy and say move on when he got a total lemon. There will be plenty more of these threads for the 3rd gen Taco. It simply hasn't, isn't and won't stand the test of time like 1st and 2nd gen tacomas have.

They seem to be having fire sales on Dodge / Jeep, so there is that option.

Man that's crazy, I have 125k on mine, and I've only done the maintenance. Knock on wood so far so good.
