I just had mine tune done by WickedMatt up here in NH. The process was quick and he was insanely knowledgeable about everything. I didn’t expect the smooth 1st through 3rd improvements. I did tone down the throttle from mild to lite due to backing in my tight garage, but it was fun to try it. The truck accelerates like my 4runner now and really makes the truck fun to drive. What an improvement.

    Thank you!

Paul did mine about a month ago and wow, I could not be happier! Paul was extremely nice, knowledgeable and patient with my mechanical stupidity. It drives so nice, towing is better, MPG are slightly better.

I have the 9.0 tune which I have enjoyed, all but the gear hunting in cruise… Drives me absolutely crazy, it’s completely unusable if you’re towing anything, especially.

Does the 10.0 fix that? Also I saw somewhere that there is a gear lock tune? I asked my tuner about that and he did not know, does that mean when you are over in the gated part of the shifter that it locks it into gear both high and low, as in it will let you lug it a little bit or is it just gonna downshift regardless of where you have it… Appreciate the help. Otherwise the tune is great and it does not hunt gears when you’re not in cruise, but call me lazy, I don’t wanna do a 900 mile drive constantly checking my speed. I sure wish I would’ve been able to find another six speed but they were not obtainable when I got this truck. These transmissions and their shift logic are absolute trash

Couple of points here.. Cruise control's throttle application strategy is very aggressive. The feed forward control of pedal application is going to overshoot the necessary amount of pedal application required to maintain speed on a incline. It's a aggressive input is going to make the vehicle prone to more downshifts when used. That's not something any tune can control, especially in adaptive cruise.

Secondly, cruise should not be used in our opinion when towing. Too many dangers and risks involved..

Per the Owners Manual of your vehicle, you should not be towing in "D" and should be in "S5" or lower when towing. Our calibration is designed to tow in S5 or below just as the manual recommends.

There is no "10.0". We have the OTT-CE (CARB EO D-883) tune, but that's a different calibration.

2nd gen weighing 5800#'s with bumpers, skids, lift, tires, etc. Truck was really sluggish. I went for the spicey tune and I'm really enjoying it. I can squeal the tires on take off if I want to, but can still go easy and take off smooth. It feels like I have a lot more low end which is very fun. The acceleration up to high way speed is much better with smooth shifting. It pulls over mountain passes without trying down shift constantly. Best money I've spent in a long time!

We've had a lot of folks asking about obtaining a copy of the CARB EO for the OTT-CE calibration for 3rd Gen 3.5L Tacomas. You can find the EO here: https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/sites/default/files/aftermarket/devices/eo/d-883.pdf

Feel free to share this with your emissions inspector if they require the letter. Your CARB-EO Sticker will be provided to you through your retailer or from OTT directly (if you purchased files or a tuning bundle).

I am getting ready to pull the trigger on my OTT tune next weekend down here in Southern Oregon. My question to the users here is : which level of tune should I go with?

This is a daily driver with 70/20/10 driving (70 percent around town, 20 percent freeway, 10 percent fire/gravel roads); no hardcore offroading. I hate the mushy throttle response. I hate how it downshifts every time you touch the throttle. Ya, gear hunting on cruise control sucks. But do I go with the lowest level of tune? Or do I step it up a notch. And also, there will come a day when I buy a travel trailer and do some towing. Thanks.

I certainly can't tell you what "I" think you should have... But, I can tell you that I'm an old fart that doesn't off road, I'm about 40% around town, 60% freeway, with a fair amount of towing mixed in (my boat) and I got the mild/medium and frigging love it. I did not even realize how crappy my throttle response was until I got the tune and went "WOW, it feels like a normal truck now!!!!"

I'm extremely happy with the results.

Considering a tune for my second gen, any concerns with tuning a higher mileage truck? When I tow my camper, some extra grunt would be appreciated LOL.

If it’s been well maintained and doesn’t have any underlying issues it’ll be fine! We’ve done a lot of higher mileage vehicles.

I like to send higher mileage 2nd Gen folks to this post to highlight the benefit of doing some maintenance on the vehicle. I’d recommend you do the services shown here before tuning if you haven’t done them recently. Just some basics can really have a solid impact on the truck.

You talk to tuner and you have to decide which level of tune you want. Tuner will install tune in your Tacoma, then you test drive it. Go from there.

Thanks for that. Is Mild/Medium the lowest level? Or is that the next level up from the bottom?

Thanks. So it sounds like you can tweak it on the spot to a higher or lower level of tune after a test drive?

For the 3G Tacoma we have the following (from closed to stock to most aggressive): Lite Minus, Lite, Mild, Medium, Spicy, and Super Spicy.

Yes, you can have it adjusted on the spot with your tuner. Do not be afraid to ask for their opinion/input based on your conversation(s) with them and the vehicle setup/use. But I strongly encourage you to try a step above and a step below what you try initially, even if you find you like that. There still may be a better setting for you.

I got the OTT tune files and do it myself. With 265/70/17 and steel rear bumper, I started with Lite/Mild. After one full tank I switched to Mild/Medium. I drive the speed limit but when I need to push it, this setting is perfect for me. Good luck! You’ll be so happy with OTT.
