God bless you for taking your and your loved one's security on your own,,, as no one else is going to do it!
That said; IF something happens, the legal system isn't going to care what you were told, or by who. Know your local laws, and don't take anyone else's word for it. It is very common, one cannot use deadly force to protect property, but I am not going to say that's across the board.

If I had to shoot to defend my life or the life of another ... I would put the gun on the ground, unloaded, and fully comply with the police when they arrive. "Dirty Harry" is just a movie.

I have no personal knowledge of that. I only know what the DOJ thinks. Until I must interact with them ... I will reserve judgement.

I’m not planning on shooting anybody. I’m planning on handling this in an entirely different manner. I never thought of the key, because I’ve never used it. I know most panels have a VIN tag somewhere…at least they used to, and was looking for a method by which to prove that if I found mine, it was mine.

    Thats it, and we’re there.

I’d take other posters’ advice and arrange to meet up at a sheriff’s station parking lot, then try the key.

If you get another tailgate, might as well get the OEM power tailgate lock kit. Best $170 I’ve ever spent.

I am pretty sure that the tailgate lock can be quickly and easily defeated by gaining access to the mechanism under the plastic on the inside of the tailgate. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen a video or heard from someone on TW whose tailgate was stolen even though it was locked.

In this situation when it is just a tailgate, there is no force other than legal and civil court that can be used. Even in California though, if someone is in your home (there are some caveats for who is a stranger etc.) you don't have a duty to retreat and the assumption is that they are there to harm you/your family, and you can neutralize the threat, up to and including deadly force.

They don’t care…I’ve got buddy’s in the dept…they can’t do anything without a warrant, and they can’t get authorization to gather enough evidence to get a warrant. Nor can they bring in civilians to help with a case.

    I’m working on something.

Apparently he did not see that role as a degradation, even given his previous serious film roles (ex: "Breakfast At Tiffany's"). He was just having too much damn fun with the show.

It’s more of deterrent than anything. I’m sure if a crook is determined, they’ll take the whole truck.

Bullshit. You can shoot somebody because they steal your plants? Educate yourself.
