well, I just had one weighed, just over 40lbs, with ring and hardware. Weight advertised is shipping weight.

These new limit straps are beefy...

Is it dirty or does it change color from the heat? If dirty the only place where the contamination could come from would be from degradation of the internals themselves. Where would dirt come from?

Most oils do, but the coating on the wearband is kinda dark too, could be from that. That's normal wear that's always occurring. In the last two shocks I've torn apart (one from ADS and one from King) both had aluminum shavings from the machining process that were never cleaned out.

Technically, the wear band should never actually touch the body. The oil should prevent that. However as oil shears, it becomes thinner and less effective at providing an adequate film.

I would think shaft loading and sometimes less than ideal temperatures makes contact a reality.

It really shouldn’t. The wear bands operate on the same principles as a crank or rod bearing. Simply there to take damage if needed along with setting the oil film thickness. A shock shouldn’t really ever see side loading in a proper setup. At least not to the extent of making the oil film non existent.

Temperature however is a different animal. Once the oil breaks down, damage will begin as it can no longer support the loads it is being put under.

August 2024 rebuild. Probably could have reused these. Replaced them anyways.

You're wrong... that's not how it works.

It's not a wear item like the name indicates it is... :crapstorm:

And some mystery oil +metal from some very trashed shocks I bought for spare parts. I bet chips in the shaft introduce plenty of dirt and metal shavings from bushings. I agree new shocks have a ton of metal too.

anyone know why fox / whoever else rebrands that F&L red oil gets super sticky after a while?
