Fair enough, but given the info provided I would still go to another dealer and assume the issue should have been addressed (prior to test drives) by the dealer selling it. If I bought from a dealership and poor recall work was done by a previous dealer or the one I bought it from, I would be equal levels of upset and likely get repairs done elsewhere. That’s just me, but you make a valid point.

 

^It's important to take emotions out of the purchase. It's a 5 year-old used truck. If the price is better than typical for age and mileage, and you can negotiate satisfactory repairs before closing, then it's ok to move forward. There's no "trust" here. Have to do your due diligence and inspect the truck yourself for common 3rd gen problems. The Toyota dealer is no different than a street corner used car dealer in this regard.

Where to take the truck repairs in the future should always be a separate discussion. Since it's out of warranty, a Toyota specialist indie shop is usually better, more flexibility in parts sourcing. In my experience, dealer techs like to shit on non-OEM parts and shit on other shops' work.

 

Definitely check the VIN for the recall. Go from there.

true but in this case it’s a known issue that’s been fixed in other tacomas. We still don’t have confirmation that the recall has been done to this specific Tacoma.

if this wasn’t a known issue to tacomas and there wasn’t a fix or recall or anything then in that situation yes it would be better to pass on this truck.

My original point still stands, no matter how valid your points may be. If it were me, I would look elsewhere.

 

^You have the wrong expectation that a Toyota dealer somehow should stand behind a 5 year-old used vehicle. The seller should never be expected to act in your interest. *You* as a buyer need to do due diligence, take it to another shop for inspection if you aren't mechanically inclined.

 

Pump recall or maybe they didn't tighten something properly, I was on maintenance for rear axle bolts and nuts, and they took off shock on passenger side, two weeks after i was changing suspension for lift and found that they forgot to install upper washer on the shock....

Secondly, you’re entirely missing my point, or entirely ignoring it. I agree that a seller/dealership’s main priority is to sell you a car, no matter the state it’s in. This obviously means ensuring the vehicle is the condition you deem acceptable prior to purchasing. With that said, a Toyota dealership should also absolutely stand behind a 5 year old used Toyota they are selling. That’s not even out of many warranties these days lol


Lastly, If I test drive any vehicle and the issue that happened to the OP happens to me then I would go to another dealership. I don’t expect them to do me any favors, but that would lose my business on that vehicle. There’s nothing wrong or right about how I would proceed. Just how I would proceed forward, not sure why you are so adamant at trying to tell me my viewpoints are wrong

But no, my expectations just seem to be different and/or higher than yours seem to. Different does not equate to being incorrect.

You seem to disagree with how I would have treated the situation and, consequently, the input I provided for the OP. It’s ok to disagree, I encourage it, but I am not wrong or naive in my expectations. I continue to stand by recommendation to find a new dealer, as do many others on this forum, it seems.
