Just had a boot blowout and looking to add these to my rig (actually a 4th gen 4runner but this thread seems the most comprehensive). I see RockAuto has these for less than 1/2 the price of NAPA and Oreillys. I assume I'll eventually blow the boots on these as well (~2.75" lift) and so the lifetime warranty will come in handy. My question is, has anyone dealt with getting these replaced from Rockauto?

I found this document on their website which makes me question them replacing them if they fail. They state that "damaged boots" and "broken shafts" aren't covered by their lifetime warranty... o_O

I would skip buying them from Rock Auto if you plan on using any kind of warranty from them, they're a hassle and any savings may be eaten by shipping costs. if you expect to warranty Id buy from a parts chain so you can walk in and exchange with less fuss

    THIS^^^

Would be wasteful in time and energy to get these assuming regular warranty replacement by shipping. However the savings is worth it if you're willing to reboot them yourself

Yup. I was 3 states away with a broken axle and walked into an Oreilly and got the axle warrantied and walked right out in under 5 minutes. Can't do that with RockAuto.

Don't waste your time. Reboot your current axles and do the bootslide mod.

I agree unless the CVs are completely toast.

Ages ago I got some rebuilt rear CVs for a BMW e30 and made the mistake of giving them my originals as a core. I broke 3 CV joints within two months with the rebuilds. Cardone. Eventually I gave up, sourced some decent CV shafts and rebuilt them myself, they were perfect. Put 80K on them before I sold the car. Always rebuild them if they are in good shape.

Thanks all for the advice and great call with shipping costs. In terms of ease of warranty, do you all prefer Napa or Oreillys?

How would I be wasting my time? Not being snarky, just curious why. Seems like the extended travel would be great for my lift amount with extended travel struts (Dobinsons). Not familiar with the boot mod.

The axles are pretty weak. If you don't offroad and just want something easy to warranty, then they're good for that. Otherwise OEM axles are far superior. Doing the bootslide mod will ensure you'll never rip another boot again.

Cool, thanks for the video. I'll definitely look into that. I do a fair amount of mild off-roading, and just loads of exploring the mountains where I live. Have you been seeing these axle fail?

Again, I'm in a 4th gen 4runner, just here because it's one of the most active threads on these axles. But my setup is c59-350 coils with gs59-220 struts.

I've personally broken 5 of them. I don't baby my truck but I've also never broken an OEM axle either.

What were you doing when you broke them? Which brand did you get? There a pretty beefy axle.

Rock crawling. Oreilly extended travel axles. They're not beefy at all.

Did they give you a hassle with receipts and such? I bought mine through a shop that installed them, but warrantied and replaced one myself when a boot tore. I brought the receipt from the shop's o'reilly order, which they were reluctant to look at, then told me the lifetime warranty was one time use. Is that true or was it just a dickhead employee?
