I don’t know what he has going on so without testing no point in making guesses. Just saying that much goop in there is not normal and he has something going on. If I was in his shoes I would definitely be checking some things out.

That's just due to his flavor preference. Regular vs french vanilla :bananadance:

If that goop is coolant and not moisture then the coolant level would be steadily going down. If the coolant level is always full it's not a blown headgasket

I had a LS1 Camaro that did this ... on the F-body cars apparently some are notorious for its oil consumption/buildup of condensation from short trips around and so on. So I gathered it’s like it’s sweating inside the tube and buildup from a reaction of positive crankcase venting issues with nowhere to go but up the tube and stop I guess ...oil was clear as a bell, pressure was great but it did this somewhat and the the fix for the ls1’s was a catch can canister off the side of the intake but sir that looks more rougher then what I dealt with I agree with the above u might have something sinister possibly starting ....I hope not let us know what u turn up....:fingerscrossed:

IMHO, I wouldn’t put anything in an engine except engine oil.

I have a 05, it's been doing that since the second year. For me it happens during the winter (wet) months with short trips and clears up by itself during the summer and with longer highway trips.

See that same yellow buildup during the winter. Not nearly that much and almost all in the cap itself. With the long plastic oil filler tube there is no heat making its way up to the filler cap.
Summer never any buildup.. I would expect if its head gasket etc it would be there no matter the season.

Well if it's the head gasket on mine it blew out about 150,000 miles ago. Maybe I should look into replacing it before it does any more damage?

I have a take home car for work, so I drive my Tacoma on very short drives. I’ve never experienced that gunk, but I think that’s because I use synthetic oil as Bishop84 stated. I got a Blackstone oil report done and it seems as though a trace amount of gas is making its way into the oil. All was good, but that’s due to the short drives and the engine not getting hot enough where the gas is burned off and the piston rings don’t yet expand and prevent the gas getting into the oil.

Where do you live? In the rust belt, it's common whether you use synthetic or not. I use synthetic all the time and I've had the problem, especially on the two or three-mile trips. When I know this is going to happen I try and get my vehicles out on longer runs at least once a week to make sure it gets to operating temps.

This happened to me when I first bought my 2013 taco used with 20k miles. Significantly less than that pic tho. Did the first oil changed after buying it and it freaked me the f’k out. It was during winter/ decently cold for VA (snow on the ground).

haven’t had any issue with it in the 9 years since - figured it was just condensation from whatever fuckery the sale manager did (he was using the truck as a hunting truck before I bought it - found a slug wedged between the seats/ hvac definitely smelled like deer attractant (deer piss))/ whatever dollar general quality oil that pre-owned dealership was using.

i live in south Jersey, surprisingly I haven’t gotten it yet, seeing that I make a lot of shot trips and it can get cold in the winter.

Mine was also way less than the photo. And only in the oil cap itself...

    minor tweaks
A catch can won't fix the problem, the same buildup will occur in the upper crankcase area catch can or not. A catch can doesn't really do anything except collect the small amount of oil that in mist form that typically gets mixed with the intake air flow. The catch can is a waste of $$ on a 4L and probably on the 4cyl also although I don't own one of those. The factory system for dealing with the oil mist works fine and has for the last 50 years in automotive engines.

As a test i would scrape off some of the goo and place on some tinfoil in the oven at around 200F. If you come back later and what remains is just oil its condensation.

That orange stuff comes from condensation at the oil filler tube (assuming no other major engine issues) I only get it at the winter oil change. I just changed the oil Saturday morning and the cap had no evidence of that stuff at all. I do a lot of short trips of less than a mile. Only 3/4 of a mile from my house to firehouse with many cold starts at night. I only use synthetic 5w-30 oil changed every 5k with Toyota filter. I put a piece of foil type self adhesive duct insulation around the filler tube at the end of last winter. I'll have to see if that helped at January '25 oil change.
