Tools of choice?

I have always had a toolbox in my truck bed, however with the double cab I have now I chose to remove the box to eventually have a campershell. So now everything That was in my toolbox before has to fit behind my back seat. So obviously not all of it will fit.

SO anyways... What are your essential tools you always have in your truck?

 

I put all of my tools in a plastic tote from best buy. The only thing is i dont have a shell anymore so i can't lock it in.

Do you wheel it enough to carry that "strap" & D-rings ???

Do you wrench on it anywhere and need all those tools or just a few??

Is the truck that old or uses them that you need to carry quarts and gallons of fluids??

Never used that extinguisher BUT ???

I do not how some of you do it, my truck box is FULL..my needs and my "Mack Office" and my hand tools still ride in a small box inside the cab...PLUS all the inside cubbies are full....

I like to be prepared for the worst but having to put the stuff behind my seat. I'm having to cut back a lot. I still feel like I have too much back there since if I need a screw driver I have to unload half the stuff back there haha. Just trying to figure out what the best set up was for other folks...

 

You could buy a smaller tool box and mount it in the bed under the camper shell

 

I have plans for the bedspace. This truck will slowly become purely for overland/expedition travel. The bed will have a platform/storage cabinet built in it. But I can't do that until I have a shell.. which may be a while considering the price of them

 

well if your gettin ready for an expedition, wont you want all your tools? so i agree with the above and say get a slim tool box. or make one

 

Why dont u put the tool box back on until you have a camper shell? And then wait to put the shell on until you can build whatever is youre going to build

 

I have a box and set up for trips right now. I'm just curious what everyone carries for the everyday

 

I needed it more to lock up various lawncare equipment for my trailer.

 

oh..well i just have two kinda cheap tool kits that have a bunch of random tools in them that fit under the seats. Not gonna fix my whole truck but has all the basics for sure

 

I have a tool bag with basic hand tools, a pry bar, and a bottle of Wild Turkey, what else do you need in a tool box?

 

Socket set, wrench set, screwdrivers (phillips & flat), pliers, vise grips, diagonal cutters, zip ties, duct tape, "T" lug wrench, 2 1/4 ton floor jack (because I can't stand bottle jacks--they can be dangerous on anything other than flat ground), and a tow strap.

But obviously all this won't fit behind the seat...guess that's why I have the tool box!

That's what I carry on a regular basis...FWIW

if you are "Designing" why not "Build" a tool box into it...Can you spare 4"-6" of the bed floor space for cubbys or look at sliding drawers that they put in the back of "Cruisers"; www.adventuretrailers.com is one....then deck over them....

The "everyday" changes BUT I have learned to trim the tool count
a) 1/2" breaker bar now replaces the 4-way, thin deep socket for my aluminum wheels but the breaker helps with EVERY tough nut ..
b) ratcheting metric wrenches have 2 sizes in one wrench,carrying 1/2 the wrenches now
c) common zip-ties,wire nuts & connections and bungees for both the "office" and Tacoma...better space management
d)recovery strap and jumper cables now store where my recievers were..D-ring rides in the bumper hitch while the ball takes less room...

It is your build/everyday truck with inventory changes dependent on the seasons....and it sounds like you plan accordingly....

GOOD LUCK on that build and expect constant changes; a few guys up here are "Designing" , 2 Rovers and one FJ 80 and to say they change daily would be an understatement ....

 

That's good stuff man. I didn't think about the breaker bar replacing the 4way. Good idea.

The sliding drawers are similar to what I'll have. I'm going to build the bed up about 6" and have drawers and boxes under that. But I can't do that until I have a camper top to keep all the weather out of my tools. As far as the trailer.. I'm trying to stay away from them because 1: Its more money and 2: on more technical trails they may get in the way and be more difficult to handle on the trails.

Two good crescent wrenches and a 4:1 screwdriver will get you home 99% of the time. I did have to pull the drivelines of my jeep out on the trail once do to a fubar. Thank god my buddy brought his tool kit.

Actually, a good crescent brand or better little plastic box tool kit would serve you well and be easy to store. Even better if you can put together a cloth style tool rollup whatever they call them. Wrap up nice and tight and keeps itself pretty quiet. Rattling tools in a metal toolbox gets annoying fast in my experience.

 

you're not kidding about the rattling! mine is in a fabric tool bag right now. Another great idea about the wrap up! I'm going to have to do that! This is why I love Tacomaworld!
