Looking to block some heat and glare but stay legal and still see well at night. California requires 70% or more light tint on front windows. Anyone ever do it? Couldn't find any examples of what it would look like. Going ceramic.

Are you asking if anyone has done 70% tint or 30% tint? I cannot imagine the great state of Kalifornia allowing anything near 70%.

70% means that it allows 70% of the light to pass through.
I have 80% on my front windshield and 40 on my sides.
To me that’s a good amount without suffering at night or ever being harassed by cops.

Do you think it made a difference in terms of blocking heat? Did you go ceramic?

If you do ceramic, you’ll get the heat rejection. 70% is nearly unnoticeable, I’ve got it on the windshield.

I did go ceramic and honestly it’s awesome.
My front is starting to get some orange peel after about 10 years and I need to redo it.

The factory glass, just the way it is, filters out 100 percent of ultraviolet UVA/UVB. I just measured the 1PM sun here in L.A. with a UVA/UVB meter and with direct sun (and a UV index of 9 according to my phone) the UV measurement was 4.4 mW/cm2. Put the meter behind the windshield glass and it's 0.0. I originally bought the meter to check to make sure sunglasses were filtering out all of the UV, which they were, but a good little tool to have around.

Interesting. So basically, ceramic tint would only add heat blocking to the truck. UV seems pretty mitigated.

There’s no way the front sides and windshield have 70… Maybe they meant the rear dyed glass

Anything that would darken the glass I think would tend to lesson the amount of heat conversion from sunlight passing through that glass and being trapped inside a closed environment, but I personally would never do anything that would darken the front windshield one iota as that can drastically effect night vision, which is doubly important for most people because as they age, their night vision diminishes significantly. If you're thirty years old it probably won't matter but if you're sixty it will. And then there's the safety disadvantage if you can't see the other driver or they can't see you.

    Have ceramic tint.

    Is very awesome.

You don't feel the sun on you, it's quite nice.

Driving in a car w.o ceramic tint feels off now.

Supposed to be. The factory tint on rear door windows and back windows are typically 15-20% VLT

    Ceramic is nice!
Even better add the front windshield, even it's not tinted or slightly.

I ended up going 50% ceramic on all back windows and 70% ceramic on the front two. The back is now sightly darker and the front two are a hair darker. 70 is the legal limit where im at. The ceramic definably helps with the heat here. As an experiment I parked my truck next to my wife's car, who has old school dyed tint, for a 3-4 hours and my truck was noticeably cooler inside. It's not perfect insulation, but it's better than baseline.

The 70% tint has a blueish hue to it. You can't tell it's tinted from the outside but if you open the door you can definitely tell there's something on it and nothing at all on the windshield.

I had 35% rear windows and rear windshield and 50% front windows and 70% front windshield with ceramic tint on my old scion. Haven't had the chance to tint the truck yet. I wanted 90% for the front windshield but the lightest available was 70. It was fine mostly. There was a slight rainbow effect on some areas of the windshield sometimes but I never got pulled over or cited for it but I never really did anything stupid on the road to stand out, though and this was in California.

My unpopular opinion: I agree with laws that prohibit too dark of a tint on the front windows but I think a lighter tint is fine. I think it's stupid and dangerous to tint the front so dark that people can't see in. I worked delivery for 5 years so I was on the road a lot and being able to see the driver through the window/windshield was damn important to me because I was on the road so much. If I can see the driver, I know whether they're paying attention to the road or if their stupid ass was distracted on their phone, eating, doing their makeup, reading a fucking book, etc. I can't tell you how many times ive seen a distracted driver do something stupid and almost run into me but fortunately, I was able to anticipate it because they didn't have -50% tint. People argue they want their privacy so they want limo tint all around and don't want cops to see them. Fuck that shit, you're on public roads and if you're texting, you should get in trouble for it rather than hiding behind your dark ass window. /endrant I guess.

Yeah I think I could have went 50% on the front sides max. I had the shop put up some test strips and 50% was only slightly darker than 70%. The 70% has a blueish tint while the 50% was the traditional black hue. I think doing the windshield in 70% would be great. Anything beyond that should def be illegal. It's just not necessary.

This is specifically why I got my front windshield tinted with ceramic anti glare. Driving at night is so much less tiring now and the cab does not get as hot in direct sun.
