Hello all. New to Tacomas. I’m working on a 2006 Tacoma PreRunner with a V6. The compressor shuts off about 3 seconds after the car turns on. I’ve changed the compressor, compressor pickup switch, checked the high pressure switch (looks good). I’m changing the condenser tomorrow but im wondering if there is something very obvious I’m missing.

Is the A/C light flashing when it turns off?

I am assuming you did a proper vacuum of the system before you recharged it with refrigerant?

If not you will definitely need to do that. Make sure it holds -29.9 in hg and if I recall correctly our pickups take about 23 oz of refrigerant (give or take an ounce).

Best of luck to you my man!

So we are dealing with a compressor Lock Sensor or lock sensor circuit issue.

You said the compressor does run for 3 seconds correct?

    Was the sensor OEM?

Yes the compressor runs for about 3 seconds and disengages. Just finished changing the condenser and after running another vacuum to it The light stayed on. It wasn’t until we started adding freon to it, it disengaged again.

So we are indeed dealing with a lock sensor or sensor circuit issue.

The only way to check the sensor signal is with an oscilloscope but the sensor can sort of be tested with a battery, magnet, and voltmeter.
    Lock Sensor Inspection.jpg

Beyond that you need to check the Lock Sensor Circuit integrity to the A/C Amplifier as well as checking the circuit for a short to ground, the A/C Amplifier is behind the glovebox looking straight up.

The lock sensor signal wire runs through Connector IH1 behind the glovebox and can be checked there.

I recently had to deal with this issue. My mistake was getting rid of my OE compressor speed sensor. I swapped out TWO new compressors from import direct (O’Reilly) trying to chase this thing. Their compressors come with a new speed sensor and the two that I got were bad. Get an OEM sensor, they’re getting hard to come by.

I bought a new A/C amplifier while trying to figure this thing out which wasn’t the issue. That being said I have a brand new one for sale now. If anyone would like to buy it let me know!
