That's why you have a magnetbon the drain. Pretty much normal.

True, but if everything is fine, what are your choices?

Change the diffy for piece of mind ?

If you had metal intrusion, you are not going to experience a catastrophic failure.

You did an oil change. There is not much else you can do...or trade it in, but that seems excessive.

It's good that you are concerned, but there are many other things that will fail long before the diffy goes south.

I'm obviously NOT a mechanic - but that kind of debris would NOT lead to catastrophic failure? I'm surprised... but relieved at the same time? LOL...

There is no oil pump. That debris falls to the bottom and stays there. This is one of the characteristics of gear lube. It has very little detergents to suspend the contaminates.

I found the exact same when I changed the diff oil out a couple months back on my '22 OR, front diff was ok, found it in the rear. I was certainly not impressed, but not too worried. It's obvious that the debris hadn't made its way through the gears, neither has yours. It's from a hole being drilled with a drill that was well past needing swapped out for a sharp one.

The tooling is quite old on the machinery for the 3rd gens and this is typical. Non-issue.

Found the same thing first time I drained the diff on my 2nd gen. Left over from the machining/manufacturing process.

i dont think you realize how much the oil is whipping around in there at highway speeds. this could have been up inside an axle tube and flushed out by the moving oil before ever seeing the bottom of housing. its just something youd expect the see removed during qc. which there wasnt much of because the welding spatter had to be removed in this axle for the recall aswell.

It’s machining from the diff housing, so basically the diff gets filled with oil and this piece or two of metal falls to the bottom and ends up on the magnet.

I’ve come across maybe 15-20 threads where people say, this was on my drain plug magnet, what is it?

I haven’t seen a single thread where someone said, this is what they found in my failed diff that caused it to fail.

This show how much the oil flows at speed.

yea. over 100 thousand engines being replaced due to machining debris not properly cleaned out.
