what bank is financing a '97 with 240K on it? I know the interest rate I got my '18 for, and if interest rates go up with vehicle age (which they do) Id love to know what stupid high percentage youd be looking at.

I’m sure I’d balk when I saw the interest rate. It’s a fun idea though.

Old used vehicles should be bought outright, if you can't do it, you shouldn't have it. Financing is for things that have conventional value and predictable trends.

My CU has an 8 or 9 year old cutoff on car loans.

This is the conventional wisdom. But the predictable trend of most new cars is to plummet in value during your ownership. Most people aren’t gonna keep it for 30 years either. Hell it’s a miracle of most people can keep a car for 3 years.

I’m not saying I’m gonna take a loan for that Cruiser, but if I did, it’d at least hold its value throughout the term of that loan, possibly even appreciate.

Sure it would suck to owe money on it while being on the hook for expensive repairs, like a head gasket etc. But even some of the newer turbo Toyotas have been having major issues. Even if you have a warranty, you still have to deal with your car being in the shop, and the dealer potentially giving you the run around.

I had a coworker deal with this in his 5.0 F150 - the dealer kept telling him his oil consumption was normal, and he kept going back for a million tests and almost had to get a lawyer for them to honor the warranty claim.

No I just pushed my start date back. The place here pays better and has way better reviews from employees, so if the way di give me an offer I might back out of the other place.
