Well, 20+ year old ones can certainly be.
You can get something like a fun little Mazda3 (with the 2.5 and decent miles) for a good price and you shouldn't have a bunch of headaches.

 

My dad sold an old Mazda years ago, had a flawless 210k of commuter miles with just basic maintenance w/ receipts.

blew a head gasket a week after it sold and the buyers were pissed.

 

My first truck with the 3RZ had a cracked head when it was sold to me... I mean I didn't find out until a year and a half later when it started cold starting weird and the heater stopped heatering.

 

Super common on the 2&3rz mine went about 200k miles. Only took the shop 3 days to fix it. Didn't even have to call to check on it.

People usually sell them when they burn a valve. I wouldn’t buy one without a compression test.

 

Mine has a clean frame, so there’s no point in swapping the body

 

Mechanic say anything today?

 

Probably told him to upgrade his bike, or get better footwear
