Are you saying my decision to pull the trigger on a slightly used 2023 TRD Pro right when the 2024s were coming out wasn’t a terrible one?

You laugh, but compare resale values of 3G vs. 4G two years from now.

I used to think those were the worst looking trucks ever made. The Toyota Aztec. With those cheesy mirror lights.

Like mustard, pickles and smoked herring, they kind of grow on you as you get older.

I have not seen it quite to the point the 3G is selling for more than a 4G in the Southeast. However, I tried negotiating on 3 different 3G's today and they were not budging on their "market price" listed on their website. These where 2023 OR models with Premium packages. I just can't bring myself to spend that right now on an almost 2 year old truck that close to original MSRP (or original sale price). I think you definitely have much better success negotiating new 2024 models at the moment.

The insanity of used Tacoma prices is why I bought new. I realize there's a lot of V6 fanbois but its not worth the premium. I am agnostic about one vs the other. I am not agnostic about price.

Buying new vs used has been, in recent years, a test of patience. If you had the ability to wait 1-4 months for a vehicle, you could get new. If you need a car now, you're paying a On the Lot no wait premium which was basically the same as new car price.

I agree, I like it more and do appreciate the design. Then I remembered I drove the FJ a few times as my buddy owned one, absolutely dismal and lackluster. I haven't even gotten to that horrible blind spot.

    Yeh mang.

2nd gen 2005-2011 might be considered classics..

2.5 gens are getting towards classic status.. but not quite yet. Maybe another 5-7 years.

3rd gens aren't even 1 full decade old. V6 does not necessarily mean "instant classic."

It's not just the Tacomas and it's not just recently. Tacos and 4Runners have a long history of "you're almost always better off buying new." Low depreciation is great when you want to sell... not so great if you're assessing the used market for a 4x4 Toyota.

Case in point, I bought a 2018 4Runner new at the beginning of 2019 because it was discounted below the price of used units on the lot. Lower price and lower financing for a new car made it an absolute no brainer. Granted, I did take advantage of discounts applied to a new car still sitting on the lot from the previous year but that's where the deals often are.

80 series LC is a classic. FJ is a joke of a Land Cruiser. A gimmick.

The 5th gen 4Runner is not even close to the 3rd gen Tacoma. Sure the 2nd gen Taco had some similarities as the early 5th gen but there is almost zero uniqueness between the two now.

    Wat ?

the dash is almost the same, the infotainment is the same, steering wheel same, the off road crap is the same, brakes are the same up . Engine meh … same from last gen but really similar. It really felt like the same thing when I tried to trade “up” to it from my Tacoma. But after driving i walked away disappointed af.

5th gen 4Runner is probably the biggest diversion from the similarities with the Taco. 2nd gen Taco and 4th gen 4Runner were more similar exterior and interior wise. 3rd gen Taco and 5th gen 4Runner, aside from some general platform similarities, are widely different - both interior and exterior. Edit: Even plenty of differences between the 2nd gen Taco and 5th gen 4Runner (since they were out at the same time as well as the 3rd gen).

6th 4Runner gen is definitely the return to Taco similarities. The 5th gen was the oddball IMO.

To me the 5th gen 4Runners seem like 2nd gen Tacomas as far as engine, transmission and interior styling go.

What the 3rd gen Tacoma and 5th gen 4Runner are not even close, body lines or interior sure same knobs and stuff here and there. You literally can’t tell difference between the 6th gen and 4th gen interior and the body lines are basically the same.

I’m still not sure how I feel about the outside vents on the 4th/6th gen… they just seem out of place.

I’m interested to see if the material quality will differ between the 4G taco and 6G 4Runner

Wow! Haven't seen a 4th taco interior next to a 6th 4runner. They are truly identical. Insane.

And I fully agree, having sat in, driven, worked on hundreds of 4runners/tacomas. The 3rd gen Taco vs 5th 4runner are not even close. Window switches...4runner you gotta reach for the sky.

Mechanics are even more apart. For instance a 5th 4runner don't need to bash in your inner fenders to remove the pesky UCA bolt. Taco have to bend them out of the way and struggle to remove uca bolt. 4runner vs Taco has different UCA ball joint shape. Different shocks/springs. Rear is leaf spring vs coil spring and 4 link. Rear drum brakes vs disk. They are not even remotely related besides some basic designs and interior technology. Even have different engines. Lastly one is made in Japan and one is made in Mexico or Canada or who knows where.
