I haven’t used cash in 5+ years so no. Don’t put this on me. I didn’t change my own oil, this time to have written proof of dealer service. Which btw has 4.5 stars and is the best rated dealer in a 60 mile radius.

And clearly I found the mistake someone else has made. If I was paid to QA someone’s work I would do it myself

Could have had a replacement fill cap by now and moved on. Skip the damn dealers.

I ignored toyota care free oil changes... have done them all myself.

It is potentially cheaper and less stressful that way...

yes they made the mistake, if you can do it your self then thats better, some people can't do it, but they can check what was done, either right after or a month later

I would let the dealer know . I would also let them know you are pissed . That’s the only way things get fixed ( sometimes) . When we do nothing then there is no chance . People in the working field lately don’t care any more, and the employers care about their workers even less . Which makes a work ethic that’s horrible . Bad news

If I’m not mistaken , this is not the first “missing” oil cap thread on TW, might be worth taking a Quick Look down in the engine bay/skid plate area to see if the cap is laying down there , there is a very slight chance it vibrated loose and fell off . Not absolving the dealer who did your oil change but maybe you won’t have to buy a cap , if you locate the old one .

When I first moved here, quick lube shops were a new thing for me and seemed sketchy mainly because oil changes were always a nice, slow thing for me to do. I envied the work pits in the garages though.

One day, I walked outside to see the neighbor making weird arm motions under his hood. I wandered over to ask what was up. He was duct taping / zip tie'ing his oil filler. He just left a Jiffy Lube and smelled oil on the way home. Going back and being told of the issue, the shop peeps walked out with a couple handfuls of oil caps and asked which one was his.

It sucked for a few years changing oil in apartment parking lots, but them's the breaks.

So just sayin', duct tape and zip ties are your temporary solution.

Well, at least they changed the oil. I paid for an oil change in between my free services and got home, checked everything, and they didn't even change the damn oil o_O

I would say you probably lessened the life of the oil slightly from driving without the cap on. I just did an oil change on my Outlander and accidently forgot to put the cap back on for a couple seconds at idle and it managed to spray a couple dots of oil absolutely everywhere. I think the cap/funnel on the 3.5 is a little bit better designed.

I took my 2021 Sport to dealership in Milford, DE for first oil change. After completion, I drove off without inspecting completed work.

The next day, I happened to be looking under the front end and noticed the bolts holding the skid plate were installed at an angle.

I drove back to the dealership to show them photos. Talked to the Mgr and he fetched the tech and asked why he installed the screws incorrectly.

Tech said he had to unscrew part of the air dam screws because it was cumbersome getting the screws to line up.

No reprimand or constructive reinforcement was given so I decided I would not visit this dealership ever again.

Another lesson learned: inspect vehicle before leaving the dealership.

So this happened to me approx. 2000 miles after my dealer oil change. I was out wheeling with a buddy and my truck threw a CEL. We were out in the middle of absolute no where. It was the second day of our 2 day trip, and i noticed no issues with the truck. It happened at about 10am on a Sunday and we had 4 more hours of trial time until we got back to pavement. I didnt bother to pop the hood lol. When we got back to town at about 3pm I scanned the truck and the code was for a lean passenger side bank. I got the truck home, washed it, popped the hood to spray all the dust out of my engine bay and thats when i noticed the lack of oil cap... I too was livid. The lean code would make sense due to the lack of oil cap not being able to create vacuum. There were no operable issues with the truck and the oil filter would have caught any and all debris that got sucked into the oil filler neck. Being on dirt roads there was TONS of dirt on the filler neck. It looked like I was missing a cap for quite some time. I brought it to the dealer the next morning. I was first in line. I was pretty nice about the situation, but my dealer didnt do much... they said the 3.5L dropping oil caps is common-total BS. They gave me a 50% discount on the oil change and cap and I exchanged some harsh words with the service writer called it a day. 3000 miles later, the truck is still behaving completely normally. But i do check the dealers work after oil changes now

I would go back ask for the general manager. Show the missing cap with the service invoice. Ask for a free new cap, filter and some oil for your trouble . Mention you will never come back for any type of service. Anything else is futile.
