They do have pretty basic valving, from my understanding. Reports on what pressure to run are all over the map, so I started low (too low) and have been bumping it up. So far I can hardly tell they’re there, super comfortable bump zone since it’s 2” stroke and controls it all the way to full compression.

They shouldn’t bleed down unless they’re over-pressurized or something. So far mine have kept the exact charge I put in them.

Depends on how crazy / expensive you want to get

    Here’s a good cutaway -

    upload_2024-6-13_21-8-38.png

Mostly just adjusting pressure rather than changing out shims is what 99% of people I’ve seen diy tuning will do. At some point the shims would make a difference but that’s after all the other variables are dialed for most trucks.

Mystery solved. The drivers side door alignment problem was a result of the bushings for position #2 and position #3 being swapped. Upon inspection the bushings on the passenger side were all in the correct positions.

Things are happening but on a multitude of levels, truck has been running excellent. Pretty sure I need a new alternator, but that's a minor problem. I am going to make my own E-Fan housing so I can have stronger cooling at slow speeds and more potent A/C as well. This week I will likely try to do the whole fan thing, nothing much going on. Been filling up my free time with work and building engines.

Purchased a used 5VZ with a "tick" from a local guy that parts out wrecked yotas, pretty excited about building it up for power actually. Went out to the junkyard with a friend and harvested a forged VZ crank out of a 3VZ-FE powered 94 Camry as well. Working on sourcing forged connecting rods and pistons now, yes there are forged pistons on the market but I am not interested in lowering my compression ratio. May end up having to commission a set of pistons from Wiseco or CP-Carillo.

The new 5VZ in question, dunno about the "tick" it has/had but the timing was off two teeth so its got the going for it, which is nice...

Camry crank in all its relatively rare glory...

And when I said I was building engines plural... I meant it... buddy is getting his wheeling truck back on the road for camping and winter beater duties again so naturally we had to completely overdo the engine for funzies. Currently in the stages of building a harness for the Haltech Elite 750 and reassembling this nice little 2RZ with some fresh parts including a freshly machined head with a valve job.

Will you be documenting the 2RZ build? I'd love to see it, and am curious what you think of the RZ vs the VZ.

I daydream about turboing my 3RZ but I'm a long way from actually wanting to deal with all that.

I’ll weigh in on my experience with a 5vz and a next gen rz in my 08 with the 2tr. If I could get the same performance I get with a stock 2tr out of an rz, I wouldn’t prefer a vz over the rz. I get 18-20 mpg in LA traffic at the pump consistently with my 2tr on stock 4.10’s and 265 C rated KO2’s and a 5 speed. The amount of ease to maintain a 4 banger over a V6 is a significant factor for me too.

Oh yeah, I'm involved in all aspects of this build so I will keep tabs on what we do on here if you'd like. We actually are just waiting for the oil pan to come in and then we can finally install the damn thing in the truck and get wiring going. We decided to make a downpipe today for it.

I've liked the ease of making power on the VZ for sure, but if I had another 3RZ or maybe a 2TR truck I wouldn't hesitate to slap a Haltech on and turbo them. They're good engines, the heads are kinda weak on the RZ engines but even so they're quite stout otherwise and leave room in the engine bay nicely.

    Is the 2RZ replacing a 3RZ?

If so, am I right to assume y'all chose that because the shorter stroke of the 2RZ is friendlier to boost than a 3RZ?

I can actually answer this definitely now, I guess I did so in other threads but not my own. Truck makes 345hp and 422lb ft of torque at the wheels, way more than my butt dyno had estimated haha. Clutch never slipped! Exedy under-rated this one

Sorry was still updating post haha, they're there now. I have the clean PNGs too somewhere for them, but phone pics are all I have with me ATM. I guess I took pics of the last run with higher HP but torque was down a couple lbs.

definitely awesome, I'm a little surprised that's the wheel figure tho, the rule of thumb for for 1psi = 10hp makes that seem more like crank figures?

I have the est. crank figure too from the Mustang Dyno but this is most certainly a wheel figure. Also I'd agree if timing was all the same as stock but being standalone my timing isn't the same haha
