Never trust a lube tech that can spell gonorrhea correctly the first time.

Story time, I know they’re pretty incompetent at the stealership so I always change my own oil even if with the free Toyota care, anyway I tore my shoulder and had surgery so I was forced to take it in at 10k miles, I left a tech a note politely and respectfully asking him not to over torque anything and left him at $20 tip, the guy actually wrote back saying I made his day and that he hand torqued everything. So a few weeks later when I was able to, I crawled underneath my truck and you could tell he actually took careful attention he even took a paint marker and marked the drain plug bolt.

however I have an rci skid plate and he basically switched the bolts when replacing them (the long bolts go in the back but he put them in the middle) luckily he hand torqued them if he took the impact gun he would have definitely stripped some threads and fucked some shit up

so even when they’re careful they’re still incompetent and fuck up

^This is why the TRD skid has those bolt retention clips...

I guess I've been lucky. The only dealer oil change "mishap" I've experienced was when the tech left the dipstick sideways. That's what I could see, anyway. Though, slightly worryingly, during the same service, the tech said that he almost forgot to torque the lugnuts after rotating the tires. I only found out after reviewing my dashcam footage.

I say have a dashcam with parking mode enabled. It's not the best, but better than nothing. But some people may not like Big Brother watching them.

Google reviews for dealers are not always accurate. Especially if they're eons old and are mostly about the sales experience.

The more I hear about horror stories from dealers, the more I'm tempted to go to an independent shop.

Not trying to absolve the dealer, but at least they're making an effort.

This seems like the best resolution!

My car has some warranty work that needs to be done - I have been putting it off because I don't want them screwing my car up
    This thread re/affirms my apprehension

I'll trade you a missing oil cap for a scratched door during the axle inspection that required the door re repainted.

Stuff like this is why my truck has only gone into the dealership for 1 free oil change and not going back for the recall. When did my own oil change at 15K miles the drain plug and filter required a breaker bar to loosen.

Delivered to your house! Even if they did lose the cap, that is pretty good customer service in my book. (Owned it, made amends.)

The -one time- I let a dealer change the oil on my Civic and they over-filled it by 2 quarts (!) and it killed the O2 sensor within 100 miles.

The -one time- I let a dealer change the oil on my old Toyota pick-up and Popeye the Gorilla tech breaks an A/C line trying to reach down to the filter.

I worked with a construction inspector who always said: You don't get what you expect, you get what you inspect.

I would start going to different dealership. Maybe they only have 1 dude doing oil changes, so he keeps messing up

The dealership I goto now in Dover has provided great service for me and my Sport.

At my first appointment, service department staff came out because I was inspecting my truck in the holding area.

"Is there anything wrong?" they asked.

"I'm just inspecting the work completed on my truck", I said.

Apparently, no one had ever done that in the whole time they've worked at that location.

Ever since that first visit, the service department person put out an APB to staff about my routine after-maintenance checks. lol

That should send a clear message to do it right the first time! Though I'd take it a step further and take pictures before they take your car into service. Just in case they damage your ride and argue that "it was there before."

Though, for some odd reason, I feel embarrassed just doing this.

Here us what I see is the problem . It’s totally ok the lube guys are newbies , but so long as an experienced tech is there to check the work and when they are ultra new , walk them through step by step.. Then when done the supervisor should sign off when done . If done in that manner you teach the new people correctly and hopefully you end up with good tech down the road

At this point how can I NOT do this ? They have conditioned me to believe they are incapable of a simple task that has 5 steps. 1 of which they missed

Add me as another satsisfied customer at my local dealership. They’ve done 2 oil changes so far (the free 10,000 mile one and then I have them do one every 5000 miles as well.) Truck comes back all buttoned up properly with nothing missing. They even take before and after pictures.
