Opening morning magic. Sun wasn’t even over the horizon when I shot him. 19 yards and he ran about 80.

Daughter #1 dropped a cow elk in 10 Friday evening sitting water. Opening day! First ever chance at an elk (big game #2). It appeared with another cow which was still nursing a calf.

Competitive shooting appeared to be paying off, kiddo sat back and calmly watched the solo elk wade and drink for about 15 minutes before exited the water and gave her a good angle separate from the other two. Found it in her scope right away and pressed the trigger. Shot #1 went perfectly through the heart and shattered a shoulder.

The cow took four steps to provide an even better angle. Daughter took care of the lungs, watched it drop, put her spent shells in her pocket. Nerves of steel!

Boneless weight was 151 lbs, good size beast. She's very proud of her achievement as she should be.

Thankful for her solid shooting, it was hot AF (90s and 50s) for elk hunting and tracking would have sucked. We were thankful to drive right up to it, but we hauled it off whole from the water so the tank wasn't spoiled for others. Loading wasn't easy, but we were glad we did it as we helped another kid set up on that tank this morning.

The bulls were still screaming and fighting, most were broken. Was totally entertained last night by my friend calling them to a few yards from our glassing spot while three bulls yelled at each other over his mewing.

Ran into one covey and you could tell I'm rusty haha. The hunting was ok, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. Didn't see any on the ground, they were all in the bushes and I didn't hear any calling.

Just got back from SW Colorado for a family muley hunt. After a few days I dropped a nice buck from 280 yards on Halloween Thursday in time to have him gutted, skinned, and hung up so I could shower and run my kids into Durango to trick or treat.

Friday afternoon the kids took some practice shots then it was their turn.

Friday evening DD2 dropped a nice buck from 261 yards. Saturday evening DD1 dropped a sweet buck from about 100 yards. Zero tracking. Kids learned to skin 'em, pretty cool.

Three for three in three days! Truck rode pretty heavy from the weight of the coolers. The snow, sleet, and rain were a welcome change from the heat we left 9 days ago.

We'll remember that hunt for a very long time! Which is good bc it's not likely to be repeated.
