Curious about a noise the engine makes

One question I have for anyone familiar with the 2.4L turbo, what is that buzzing sound I can hear when driving about 30mph and giving a little gas? It's not the turbo spooling up and whistling. It sounds like a cricket or cicada buzzing on very light touches of the accelerator. I can only hear it when cruising with the windows down and the radio off. I don't think it's the air intake, and I never heard fuel injectors sound like that, but I could wrong. Maybe an electronic part of the fuel injectors.

 

Most likely the d4s system. Our Corolla cross with a very similar engine makes a noise similar to what your describing

 

My wife just bought a new corolla cross last month. It is whisper quiet compared to my 24 tacoma. I've never heard any strange sounds coming from the cross compared to the taco. I actually like the cross too.

 

Totally normal based off what everyone else is saying. If I remember right it’s the injectors. The truck definitely makes some unusual noises

 

Likely the fuel injectors, turbo injectors are loud. Ford had lots of people complain about the injector noise when the ecoboosts came out over a decade ago, its one reason they put that engine cover thats got like 2 inches of foam to absorb the noise and they put a foam cover on the high pressure fuel pump.
I admit I have not seen/heard a 4th gen tacoma other then when driving.

 

Is it by chance when you're giving it moderate throttle somewhere between about 2400-3200 RPM? And more noticeable in Eco mode?

Edit: You're not talking about that. I know exactly what you're talking about. Yeah if you drive through a residential neighborhood where the houses are closer to the curb, you can hear this insect noise echoing off of the buildings with your windows down. It's some sort of weird eccentricity of this engine.

 

They definitely excelled with this one… More power, more torque, more noise!
