Well you also flamed me for the idea of going into debt for a cool classic Land Cruiser. At least I know the Honda would start up and run. Hell, it's probably still more reliable with those miles than the brand new ones with the CVT.

A lot of OEMs had oil burning issues in those years, I think due to lighter oil rings to try and meet CAFE regs. Toyota was no exception with the 4 cyls in the Camrys and Corollas.

Because they're both bad ideas, mind you not for everyone... But for you they are. You're at the point where you can't afford to buy the steam off a hotdog... you need something reliable and you need to limit risk. LEASE

At that point I'd rather just go car free and get a nice commuter bike than lease some CVT miserybox just to drive 2 minutes down the street to work.

Then do that, if your long term life goal is to bike to a coffeeshop everyday then a bicycle falls perfectly into "living within your means" category and certainly limits risk.

Even the place in Moscow is within biking distance to work. Same with the places I'm waiting to hear back from here locally. Not everyone commutes 4 hours into work every day in a Ford F950 on the 30-lane superfreeway.

    @Ozark_RegCab

    You make a great point.

Think a few of us mentioned going the car-less route and if it works for you, then do it.

Can you imagine how much money you'd save with no gas expense, maintenance, insurance, etc?

That's even more you can set aside into your savings.

20k list, means after throwing whatever cash you get from the Taco it'll probably cover taxes and be about 20k OTD. Gives you like 400/mo payment and you probably wont have a single issue significant before its paid off.

Alright no need to go to the extreme, no one here has suggested such a thing to you.

But if going without a vehicle is a possibility for you, then do it.

Doesn't your girlfriend have a Camry? That solves getting groceries, etc that you wouldn't want to carry on a bike.

I could look at CPO ones too. Even the newer Imprezas aren't bad, especially if I can find one with a manual.

Going anywhere outside of Moscow/Pullman will REQUIRE a car, examine a map and you'll see they're REMOTE, and biking is no fun in negatives and snow. Don't strawman me, I won't fall for it

I was joking but yea she does have a 13 Avalon which is dead reliable at 94k miles.

Ooooh yeah that'll suck on a bike.

Is he doing the move still?

If Nick moves, he should lease.

If he remains, he should ride his bike and save money.

I am hesitant with you going carless. You might get too comfortable, and I don't think you should get too comfortable.
Having a car gives you the ability to move jobs without a significant hurdle in the way.

I just see us talking again in 3 months, "I have this offer but that means I have to buy a car to do it, is it worth it?" and going back and forth in that for weeks and missing out on the opportunity.

The only downside is I wouldn't get to go out of town to the National Forests, but I guess I can't afford to have fun anyway. I could probably save up for a winter beater at least, like some old Nissan or Subaru I could just drive til it stops moving.
