If you're going to spend $14k on a used car with 130k, just spend $20k and get a new-used car with under 20k.

$20k for a 1 year old 14k mile corolla hatch I posted earlier vs $14k for a 17 year old 130k mile honda element is no contest imo.
I wont accept your argument if its based on the cvt in the corolla

Unless the monthly payment increase will be too much, but then I still think you can get a much better value than a 17 year old car with 130k for ~15k.

I can take a look around, that dealership has a really excellent rep tho. He takes care of customers if they have any issues and his cars are all pretty shipshape. I think id rather deal with him than a big corporate dealership, even if they might have some lower mileage stuff around.

Or if you still want an SUV with AWD, a CRV.

Heres one with half the miles of that element, 8 years newer (half the age) and only 4k more.

    https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/inven...ype=BEST_MATCH#listing=391512569/NONE/DEFAULT

Thats not even a good deal either, just working with active listings near you.

I'd search around more online. See what everything you'd find acceptable goes for, and how much more car you get as you spend a little more.
I think that under 15k the cars start getting exponentially worse while the price drops linearly. Meaning, with small increases in the price you pay you can start getting exponentially newer and lower mile vehicles. The limit on that I think is around 20k, then you're paying more just for the sake of newness, which isn't worth it.

Maybe I'm wrong, but thats how it seems to be to me.

I mean anything with a loan is going to require him to purchase full coverage insurance anyway might as well cover something you actually want fixed not some 17-year-old econo car

Yeah, and that made me think of a couple other things @Ozark_RegCab
First being, interest rates are much better on newer used cars than older used cars. And I don't know if Credit unions would want to touch something 17 years old. Big banks drop out at ~ 4 years old, I imagine most credit unions are probably in the 10-15 year max range.

And the next being, he's right, you should get something you actually want. You will more or less be stuck with it until its paid off, so try and find something you would actually want to be stuck with for 5 years or however long your term will be. While hopefully still being in your price range and not 17 years old.

You're lucky you don't need a car at this moment, so I think the last thing you should do is walk down to a used car dealership feeling desperate. Go for test drives sure, but give yourself time before you make a decision, and be sure you can just walk away after the test drive. Don't get roped into playing the numbers game inside after driving the 1st car.
