Had somebody recent do this to a trailer I sold. Custom built trailer for a roof top tent. I listed at 3k, sat for a bit and finally took 2500. The same day he relisted for 5k and it hasn’t moved

    I've got the woodland mills.

Fantastic grinder if you have an HST tractor & 20+hp at the PTO.

they say you only need 15.... But it really didn't do well on the smaller tractor.

Also note that these are NOT recommended for clutch/manual trans tractors..

My L3901 is an HST.... as was recommended to me in this thread back in Mar/April. According to the Kubota spec sheet there is 30.6 hp at the pto at 2700 rpm. The pto reaches the requisite 540rpm at 2580 engine rpm, so I guess the hp would be somewhat less at that pto speed?

The difference in HP across 120 rpm would probably be measured in the decimal range.

Great job, until the next time it rains and it washes out again. We have a utility path that looks a lot like your road. It rains, it washes out, we fix, it rains, it washes out, we fix it, and so on and so forth. You either pave that spot, or you divert the water from running down the road. The person I work for would rather fix the road every couple of weeks and continually deal with it as opposed to doing a permanent fix. I'm more of a permanent fixed guy.

Looks good, if you can get a good less resistant path cut before it rains you might continue to be in good shape.

Also those guys that make grading driveways look easy… having never used a machine of any type like this I had the bucket going every direction except for the right direction. Looked like a drunk driver out there.

I'm in a battle with my driveway and it washing, fix, wash, repeat. It's a shared driveway and I would love to fix it right, but that takes the one thing I don't have. I have equipment to fix it, I don't have the money to add gravel or have it paved so I continue to fix it after it rains and will continue to do so until I can't anymore or I find a sac of money laying in the ditch that washed in from somewhere else.

That 3901 hst is a great tractor.
You will have no problem at all using that grinder on it.

I've done close to 200 stumps with mine, still on the original teeth. If you stay out of gravel/rocks & learn how to feed it.... They last a long time.

Now about that PTO speed.... On the 3901: its marked on your RPM gauge where the perfect 54orpm spot is... Don't be bashful about running it there. Its right in your manual that they are designed to run at that speed. Best torque, most cooling thru pump system & least bind on your hydro pump.

Some tips/tricks for you that I've learned?

Run in low range at the speed... This will let the tractor pull its way at the proper speed thru the stump. Trying to go too fast is what will break teeth, shafts & your tractor.

NIBBLE at it. Depending on whether you get a right or left side exit will give you which way you go with it. Again: NIBBLE at it. While it will take a bigger bite....... Only taking about an inch of depth at a time is much much easier on your stuff & its actually faster because it doesn't bog it down.

Hard/soft woods: everything I have is hardwoods. Oak, ash & so on. Softest thing I've got is a little pine. Most of my stumps are 2' or bigger & it only takes me about 20mins to do a 2' stump of ash.

If ya been doing a bunch of them? Ya get quicker by being efficient in you movement.

The grinder will get you about 6" below ground, then back drag & level her out.

Absolutely the best thing I can tell you to do with this?

Get a magnetic camera with the little screen or blue tooth it to your phone. This lets you stay straight in the seat. Eliminates all the twisting on your neck, back. HUGE timesaver.

I also try to have several to do at a time. Gets ya back in the swing of it & nice & smooth.

Last thing: if the yard is wet......... WAIT!! Cause you are gonna make a mess with all the back & forth over the same spot.

This thing pays for itself if you do 10 stumps vs renting one or paying someone to come do it for you.
Most of the pro guys are 200 each or more in my area.

Oh yeah you will suddenly have lots of "friends" who want you to do theirs....

Thanks for the wealth of useful information! I know that I need to learn better how to shift the HST between Low-Med-High. It always seems VERY stiff to move the lever, sometimes impossible. The owner manual says "don't force it". I've been just leaving it in Med so I don't break something trying to move the lever. :annoyed:
If I get this device it will be a totally new experience, as I currently don't have any 3-pt mounting attachments.

Anytime I can help a fellow tractor guy..... I'm very chatty. All the guys always help me, so its pass it on to the next guy.

They can be sticky in the range changer. Mine is as well.

Best thing is to not have it in a bind & have the brakes on. I let it free roll just a hair, hit the brakes & then she slides right in. If it doesn't slide in? Then let off the brakes just a touch so it will start to roll.

    That should do it.

Seriously though a 3901 is a great machine & you should be proud of it!

Ok thanks... ill have to memorize those instructions and give them a try next time I'm on the tractor.

I ordered the MechMaxx that looks to be the same as the Woodland Mills, at least in the pictures I've found. Reviewing the install video on the MechMaxx site, I'm wondering if I should plan to get a 3-pt Quick Hitch prior to installing the stump grinder? It appears there is a possibility that I may have to cut off a part of the included pto shaft. So the optimal shaft length would probably be different with or without a quick hitch, yes? If I buy one now, is there any reason to avoid the $134 cheapo model from Harbor Freight?

If you think the shaft is gonna be too long? Sure a quick hitch is gonna take up about 4" of length.

Just make sure you get a heavy quick .hitch. I just busted mine & had to move up to a QH10.

I love the quick hitches & since I have to change things so often they are super handy. You can stay in the seat & grab it & drive to a spot to hook up the shaft,

Once you get your grinder hit me up & will point a couple of other things to you.

i dont know it it'll be too long or not. But the guy in that video had to cut an inch or two off. I think his tractor is smaller though, I think it says BX235 on the tractor hood. Around 8 minutes into the video is where he shows cutting the pto coupling piece to reach some specific length. And he does also have a quick hitch installed on his tractor. I guess I won't know for sure until it gets here... which will probably be at least a week. Do you think the HF quick hitch will do the job? Screenshot_20240829-192026_Drive.jpg
