They have not. Still waiting on the new transmission to come in I'd imagine so the truck isn't completely bricked in their shop.

Is the consensus here that transmission failure is a matter of when not if? Is this issue as big as the Tundra debris issue? Or do we not have a clue as to how big this issue really is?

There is no consensus. Only Toyota knows how big the issue is, and they aren’t telling.

Which they absolutely should not be doing if they are making failure time bombs that'll die unexpectedly - when brand new to boot. I wouldn't want one. Any manufacturer building products with known faulty components is guilty of negligence at minimum. Not one manufacturer of any product that I know of today makes the same quality product they did 20+ years ago. What has not gone downhill? Cast iron skillets maybe. Hard to fuck one of those up at the manufacturing level. Some company probably has though.

Maybe the drawn out delay is b/c you don't have a YT channel with a million subscribers. I bet you would get treated differently.

Toyota build and sell 13K+ Tacomas a month. They're all the same exact transmission. There's a warehouse somewhere with thousands of these trannys. If they wanted to, they could easily have a new tranny at your dealership within 2-3 days and it could be replaced before lunch time.

It sucks if you have one of the early problem trucks, but as is typical Toyota fashion, we can expect them to quietly and obsessively correct the issues…Thats not ideal, but it is probably the #1 case for remaining loyal to Toyota while they work the bugs out, versus fleeing to other brands.

Contrast that over at GM, where for years, dealers were (allegedly) directed by the manufacturer to insist to their customers that shudder is a perfectly normal phenomenon.

I have worked for several companies. Each one has its own culture. GM is one of let's see how we can fuck the customer over because this is fun.

And just because one is a refugee of a brand does not make one a Toyota fanboy.

My transmission went out with 2380 miles on it. Great service from the dealership and it took 5 weeks to get it back. The new tranny came in under 4 weeks, but the dealership would not use the old torque converter as there were brass shavings in the pan and they would not take a chance so waited for a new one. I've put over 3K on the replacement, some in 4 wheel drive and all is good at this time. Can't help but hold my breath when out of cell service tho. These are nice rigs.

You make it sound like Toyota never has these types of issue. Talk to the folks with totaled tucks from rusted frames and all the guys with peeling paint. Not to mention clear coat failure, mis-aligned body panels, etc. My 2010 Taco was super reliable but they don’t build them like that anymore. I thinks most OEMs quality has gone down hill. That’s why I’d get an extended warranty on any new vehicle today.

Any symptoms before your trans went out? What was your build date?
