bilstein driver/passenger? help

Is there a difference in the drivers side and passengers side bilstein 5100's? The people I ordered the shocks from are telling me that the passenger side ones are on backorder for a month. I cant see there being any difference and should be able to just use a drivers side on right? If I am wrong let me know, otherwise I am going to just order another driver one and call it good.

 

Isnt one a little longer than the other? What difference might I feel. Wouldnt one side not flex as much as the other, am I right? Would there be any problems down the road if I go ahead and get a driver side one? I really dont want to wait 3 weeks for the stupid shock, but if I have to I will. Or does anyone know where I could order a passenger one that is in stock?

 

The rear shocks definately have a left and a right specific side.

Not to sure about the fronts tho? Well at least I didnt see anything on the box, packaging or shock which indicated they were side specific.

Different shocks for different side is due to the fuel tank being on your drivers side. Which makes sense why the rears are side specific.

 

So does it really matter if you have a driver on the passenger. You wont notice the valveing that much would you? I just dont see it being that big of a difference. Has anybody found a place that has any passengers in stock right now?

 

Thats wrong. The passenger side is longer.

5100 Lengths
Driver Ext: 21.6 Col: 14.00
Pass Ext: 22.5 Col: 14.60

For the love!! I guess I will have to wait a month, cuz I cant find one anywhere else. I would still like to know what the downside would be of putting a driver side on there. Gotta love it when youve waited 2 years and finally get all your parts to do your lift and then one stupid little piece is missing. Thats my luck.

 

Honestly, there probably wouldnt be an issue with putting two driver's sides on. Your passenger side would just have 1/2" less down travel before maxing out. Too long could cause bottoming out issues, but slightly too short shouldn't really matter all that much.

 

Ya thats what I was thinking. I dont do enough offroading that flexes that much to really matter. I think I might just go with a driver side unless I can come up with someone who has a passenger in stock.

 

Instead of waiting a month... why don't you order from Wheelers or Downsouth Motorsports?

Well I only need one since I already have the driver side. Maybe I will call them and see if they will sell just one. Geez $175 and $185, the place I ordered them from I got them for $155 shipped.

 

The 5100 adjustable front shocks are the same for either side.

The 5100 series shocks for the rear are side specific, the driverside rear shock is shorter than the pass. side rear shock, DO NOT TRY TO SWITCH !! ....

Driverside rear= SHORT

Pass. side rear = LONGER

*Edit* I Posted about the fronts, looks like you're talking about the rears.

DSM - can't find rears for 1st gens on the site... But if you PM "Downsouth Motorsports" they'll give you a quote quick. I had them price some OME stuff and i heard back within a few hours (During the week/business hours)

Ok thanks I will check into it. I decided I am not going to try and use a drivers side on it I just dont like the idea. Hopefully one of the places will sell me just the pass side.

Look at the serial numbers the shorter shock (driverside) number will end in 59 & the longer shock (pass. side) number will end in 60

 

There actually is a pretty difference in the passenger and driver rears. Back when I had mine....and put them on wrong side...bed was cocked all to hell. This was when I first got them a couple years back. Truck won't sit right with 2 driver side rears.
