Want a cheap, light, non electric third key cut for hiking / backpacking. Any ideas on where?

If I had a third key in front of me, I'd cut off the physical key part and drill a hole in it to throw a fishing wire loop in it for hiking. To keep things light and less bulky, that's the idea I'm going for.

My question:

How can I get a key cut as cheaply as possible? Walmart? Make a clay cast myself somehow with a kit? Any ideas?

 

I had one cut at my local ACE Hardware. It was like $6 if I recall.

Here's the key. It's for a 2021 Tundra I bought a few months ago. No FOB, so I can lock/unlock doors and start my truck.

didnt realize you and the op were together, so what are you guys going to do with the key? unlock door or start truck?

Then had the Depot cut it for a couple of bucks. Works perfectly for just locking/unlocking the doors.

 

He’s gonna carry the spare transmitter in his pocket, I’m gonna carry the key part. It’s Batman robin kinda thing. ZIP. POW

 

No matter who out runs the bear either you wont be able to get into the truck and or drive it away. solid plan

 

My local locksmith was able to make a copy of the flat door key that came with the truck. When I go fishing I disable my fob, tuck it away in the truck and carry the little spare from the fob in my pack.

 

Why do you need to cut another key? I just remove the one that's in the main key fob, wire it into a special hiding place on the outside of the truck, disable the fob, and keep that main fob in the cab. Maybe I'm missing something....

Although having a spare door key is not a bad idea.

“H” keys don’t have a little spare in the fob. They are just not that fancy.
