Well there was at least enough oil pressure to turn it off

Thanks for this. I promise this is real -- I signed up for this site for the first time tonight in order to crowdsource some intelligence I can use to hold Jiffy Lube responsible. I have the video of the service visit because I have already initiated a claim against them, and that's step 1.

I am taking notes of all the suggestions here and will pass them along to my mechanic.

her mechanic said it was bone dry, how many quarts is enough for the light to go off? The 2tr holds 5.5 quarts with filter so let’s say 2 quarts is enough to keep the dummy light off, even after 1k miles you wouldn’t think 2quarts would fully burn off
She said she had 350 miles left on her 1k mile trip so I guess technically 750 miles she drove before her engine blew right

Hard to believe a Jiffy Lube tech did anything half-assed (eyeroll). I will watch the video again and see if the final dipstick check seemed like an afterthought.

I can also ask the District Manager at Jiffy Lube to document when the drum was replaced with a new one, right? If not, my attorney/boss can. Working for a lawyer has its advantages.

No was 375 miles into the trip, almost home (25 miles to go). We drove 1,000 miles after the oil change service and before the engine blew.

The oil was refilled after the engine blew out, but I haven't asked how much oil they put in. I will. And I'm going to have them check it today on the advice of another poster here.

their hoses should have a digital gauge of how much oil they put in to make it dummy proof to prevent this exact alleged fuck up by them, the dipstick is actually really hard to read accurately I mean if there’s zero oil it’s obvious on the dipstick but otherwise hard to read. You have to let it settle (the oil) and drain down from the tube and wait like 7 minutes to get an accurate read

I think I see the tech looking at some sort of gauge on the oil hose as he fill it, so this makes sense.

They definitely didn't wait 7 minutes to take the final dipstick reading.

The amount of oil put in should be in your receipt no? Usually they scan your vin and the proper amount pops up in the computer again to make it dummy proof as possible

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
It's proven that you can see what you want to see...pull the dipstick on a nearly empty engine and see what you expect the level to be.

No, that is to set how much oil you want to put in, not how much was put in.

The receipt says 5.5 quarts, which is what the truck requires. But the receipt also says they vacuumed the interior and washed the exterior windows during that visit. They did not. Their receipts are bull5h!t.

Exactly. I'm going to push for information on whether their oil drum was replaced right after or soon after my truck was serviced.

So I would do my own oil changes on my 2tr if this helps any after 3 or 4 quarts on my dipstick it would still read extremely low until until I put over 4 quarts did it read full and with 5.5 quarts it looked overfilled (this is with a new filter and before I cranked the engine with the new oil)

Right but how are you going to prove or disprove they put another amount, assuming they incorrectly filled it, their gauge could be malfunctioning or grossly improperly miscalibrated but then how would that explain the next guy having oil in his vehicle so unfortunately the burden of proof is on you it appears

Yeah I know. But I'm reaching for whatever I can grab. It's $7K to replace the motor with a used one. If I can get Jiffy Lube to cover even part of that....

At least five guys worked on the truck during that visit. They're all still there as far as I know.

Wow this is probably the most interesting and unfortunate mystery I’ve seen here on TW.

OP, I’m very sorry to hear this happened to you. I don’t have any suggestions other than what everyone else has already offered. I’m certainly going to be following to see the end result, if you ever are able to figure out what happened.

I would hazard a guess that they were filling from an empty drum. Whoever it was that suggested they only filled it with a small amount of oil might be right on the money. Enough to get it going for a while and then eventually seize up with no trace of oil remaining.
