Engine seized 1,000 miles after oil change

This is one of the most interesting suggestions I've heard tonight, and I will see if it can be verified somehow.

I’m not sure what color the tube is that they use to fill your truck from their drum allegedly filled with oil, but if the tube is transparent…Maybe take the video to a professional and see if they can enhance the video enough to tell if oil is actually being transferred from the drum to your truck?

 

Unfortunately, it's a black opaque tube.

 

Ugh, go figure.

 

Guy underneath tasked with removing drain plug to drain the oil drops the plug into the abyss. He goes to grab a spankin' new replacement. Guy on the topside thinks the drain dude is finished and "refills" the oil, which promptly drains out before the underside Guy returns with the new plug. Dipstick shows the remains of the oil that was there when Barbie drove in. Barbie pulls out, and the oil change team moves on to the next victim....

 

The washer doesn't look right. Maybe during your 5 hr drive, it was dripping from the drain plug at a constant drip while the system was under pressure, then once it emptied enough the engine seized.

 

This all seems so strange, there’s been lots of helpful suggestions on the cause so I won’t add anymore. What I will add is that I wish you luck and hope you get some compensation from Jiffy lube as I do believe something happened on there end that caused your motor failure

 

I honestly think this is an extremely plausible scenario....that or the one where the oil drum was empty and the tech didn't notice....maybe just enough (a quart or two) got in and gave the engine enough life to make it to 1k miles before it burned off.

 

That was the first thing that went through my mind...

 

OP has repeatedly said that there were no drips under the truck. Since the oil in the pan isn't under pressure, it would've dripped whether driving or parked.

 

There is some procedure in the manual for the 2nd gen V6 at least
something like: run it, let it sit for 5 min then remove/wipe dipstick clean and then re/insert and measure
PITA but . . . and that dipstick is also a PITA to read

When I change the oil, I always verify with the dipstick
I usually need to add 5qt

Also: Receipt says 5.5 quarts of Ken GT-1 Blend OW20 SP/GP6A
Is this the correct oil?
I have the V6 and I use 5w30 - I didn't think they started using this light/thin oil till the 3rd gen at least..

And if there actually were 5 'techs' working on the vehicle...too many cooks spoil the pot.

I can’t fathom 5 different people working to try and change oil. Sounds like an absolute shit show

 

My god you may have solved it.

 

Seems the most likely theory yet. But with little to no oil I don't see how it didn't run hot before failing.

 

There are a few plausible causes of the problem posted in the thread, and some not so plausible ones as well.

The replacement oil pan bolt doesn't look right. It's been a long time since I did an oil changed, but I don't recall one that was silver colored and shiny. Frankly that doesn't even look like an oil pan bolt to me.

As to Jiffy Lube, I refuse to use them because they seem to hire the guys that flunked out of auto repair school.

A friend had a sweet 1989 Camry with a V6. That thing flew and it was reliable as all get out. At 189,000 miles he made the mistake of taking it to Jiffy Lube for an oil change on his way home from work one day. He drove home from there, about 40 miles or so. When he got home, he shut the engine off and that was it. It never started again. He had it towed to a shop that a friend owned and they told him that the engine was siezed and beyond repair. They also told him that the oil had leaked out because Jiffy Lube had used the wrong oil filter.

They offered him something like $1,000.00 and the lawyer he used ended up doing nothing with the case.

There was no video recording back then and Jiffy Lube claimed that it wasn't their fault.

He learned an expensive lesson and I fear that you have as well. Hopefully your employer will do what needs to be done to make you whole.

nah, with the engine running the oil isn’t in the pan.
Even with a big hole in the pan the oil wouldn’t drain out until engine is shut down. Ask me how I know
