TRD Pro Full Transmission Replacement After 342 Miles

In 2024 its difficult to accept that Tacomas and Tundras built in Mexico or the Southern US using globally-sourced parts are that much better than domestic trucks also built in the US, Canada, and Mexico using globally sourced parts. Japanese-built Lexus? Maybe.

 

No real symptoms; only things I noticed were gas mileage was not what I expected (this is the 5th Tacoma I've owned) and that pause after turning onto a street from a full stop that I was told was no longer a problem. Build date is 4/24. I was at a stop light, when it turned green there was no response to the throttle, moved the selector to park and back to drive, nothing. Moved to manual side, it was stuck in 6th, no movement. In drive and frustration, I reved to about 5K and rig moved out of traffic lane to shoulder. After a couple minutes of sitting and moving selector, reved to 3K and we moved with a grating, gravel on tin foil sound to 25mph for about 12 blocks. Turned it off, talked to service mgr 120 miles away, about 10 min later started it up, put it in gear and drove off like there was no issue. Next morning drove to dealership. The Toyota tech found brass shavings in the pan. Mgr thought they plugged a sensor temporarily, but would damage the works over time.

Wow… sounds dangerous . Toyota better address this and soon for the rest of us that haven’t had failures yet

 

Starting to wonder if the Mexican labor force sucks, and Mexican quality control sucks and as long as toyota saves money on cheap labor , they feel its a profit gain to just warrenty somthing ? This is really amazing how many trucks are having issues, small or big…im ready to place order and im worried , definately waiting on 2025 but wow …i want one but honestly my 2014 4 runner has been flawless with 195,000 miles this is why i want another toyota , it will be my last truck but christ im nervouse

 

Buy a 2024 4Runner.

 

In my case it was more frustrating than dangerous. I don't know all the particulars of the cause, but after not working, then working a little, it carried me 120 miles over two mountain passes on freeway and two lane highways without a problem. The service mgr and Toyota tech were conscientious and skookum enough to investigate and make sure their customer was taken care of. I can't ask for anything more at this point.

 

**UPDATE**

Supposedly the trans should be in next Friday, we will see how that goes! It even updated to show in the Brand Engagement portal, which is most action it's had since I opened the case. Will keep you all posted.

I am still in limbo on getting my transmission. Your incident is similar to my incident. I was pulling out on the highway and it wldnt go. Limped it home, got a tow and heard I sit. Super bummed.

 

Longest Platinum warranty, truck transport back to my house from Cali and covered payments.

 

And a super easy lemon law claim should the transmission fail again, no waiting required.

They do it’s the same as if you bought it. It’s Toyotas warranty just like factory. They just give it to you complementary if you give a bit of a fight when you have these types of “catastrophic” uncharacteristicly Toyota failures. Did the same with my 2016.
