I don't think anyone said on the dealer dime as they will charge back the manufacturer but as the manufacturer agent, they have a responsibility to fulfill the obligation of providing a vehicle.

Its already been accepted...it is the norm in todays society.

The funny thing is the populous holds all the cards, getting a person to do something is easy, getting people to do something is entirely different.

Dealers provide loaners all the time on their dime without any charge to the manufacturer. It’s a courtesy. To get a loaner funded by the manufacturer you have to go through the warranty program with Toyota. I don’t think the OP was aware of the vehicle coverage until this thread. He was asking the dealership for a courtesy loaner. I think you have to call a transportation assistance claims line to implement the warranty transportation coverage. The dealer probably should know this and provide guidance, but they’re not obligated to provide a courtesy loaner on their own. It has to be done through Toyota. I don’t know if this is implemented through a rental company, through a dealership, or could be either.

FYI the Honda Courtesy Car Program (HCCP) is mainly through rental agencies.

@BronzoTaco call (800) 331-4331 to ask how to get a vehicle through the Transportation Assistance Policy.

I have learned never give auto manufacturers the benefit of the doubt.

Pursue buyback or lemon law it and be on your way, especially in this instance. They don’t care about you.

I learned that after my 2019 Tacoma. Should have pursued lemon law, but figured Toyota may do the right thing. Nope. It was nothing but problems and missed my window. Still costing me money outside of warranty for unscheduled maintenance.

No vehicle or manufacturer is worth the stress.

MAYBE this will shed light on my driving it in. Make the call after.

When the malfunction occurred I had just turned onto a busy street with 2 lanes of traffic on either side. It was 12:30 and 104 degrees outside. The truck hadn't lost any power initially but was starting to make odd noises. The road I was on was busy with lunchtime traffic and there is no shoulder on the side of the road to safely pull over to. The next safe place to pull over was the street we were heading to. My wife was in the car and sick and we were going to the doctor for a 1pm appointment. I pulled over and shut the car off. Waited a minute and restarted it hoping things might clear or tell whats happening. It started right up but continued to show the malfunction alerts. I pulled into her Dr office and called the dealership to see what they would like me to do. They said you can tow it or drive it ..up to me. Tow was a 90 minute wait and I am 10 minutes from dealership. I start driving and it really started to lose power and the dealership called me back to confirm I was on my way in and while on phone the engine stopped and I glided out of the traffic lane into a safer turn lane. Now I'm waiting for tow truck in a hot box and then outside. No need for me to open hood because I have no idea what I could do regardless of what I saw. I have not wrenched a car since the 70's. The oil started dripping when the truck was parked because there was no oil on the street I drove on at all. They towed it in and was told what I was told. Stopping in the middle of the road would have put my wife and myself in danger especially the way the people drive here. If I shut the truck off neither one of us would have fared well in that heat. If I was in a position where I would have had to push us out of the way I cannot do it... almost 68 years and a disabled NY PO with one heart attack under my belt. My wife was sick. I have answered countless calls where old people have car issues and just stop and get out and lift the hood and get rear ended and die. Not pretty and no truck motor is worth my wifes safety and mine. Just like you... my family safety is first. That is why I didn't just stop and wait for a tow. You have all the facts.

I am with you. Anyone that thinks the dealership truly gives a fk is wrong. I'm not letting this go by a long shot

Once the truck started making noise it was over anyways IMO, so I felt you needed to do what you needed to do to remain safe. Sounds bad, but going a little bit further might have been sorta a blessing in disguise, since they couldn't just fix the leak, add oil, and send you on your way. Pretty messed up to think of it like that.

Makes total sense now. Thanks the explanation. Yeah they drive like inattentive dumbasses here too, would have done the same. At the end of the day it just a machine that can be replaced as they make hundreds of thousands of them.

We have been getting terrible heat here too, risking your life being out in it. No vehicle is worth it.

That's about the size of it. No way of knowing what was happening with the motor and when the shit starts happening you have to think on your feet and situational awareness takes over and your wife, your troop or your partner are now at the top of the priority list.

If I were the dealer, would have pacified the customer and gave them a loaner, maybe it wouldn’t be the exact same thing, but at least get them through the holiday weekend. Maybe put them a Tundra that’s was $10K more so we could sell them that instead, “Hey we kinda like this better than the Tacoma.”

100%. I few people have asked the same question of why I did what I did and hope that clears it up. If I was alone I might have parked and opted to wait the 90 minutes but had to now figure out how to get my wife home after her appointment that would have been over before the 90 minutes was up. And if dealership said to not drive I could have stayed at Dr with her and made sure she got home safely. As it was I was unable to get her and she had to uber.

Funny thing is the Tundras are even worse right now. The finance lady said the are dying on the road left and right with seized engines ... the next day mine did exactly what she described.

Dealing with the same with my wife, running to doctors appointments and whatnot. She gets real sick after her scans and can’t drive. So I can empathize.

True... they might have been able to clean it up and put a band-aid on it and send me home with a lollipop! I still don't trust them not to do that

Ha! That was probably the worst thing she could have said. Was thinking they are having a hard time moving those because of the recall. Thought he would have been more than happy to loan you a Tundra.

Might be time to go back to Ford.
