More shocking than all of this was just how little power is available without boost. How do people even drive these trucks non supercharged?
I cut the belt and kept driving for the afternoon. (Probably wasn’t the best idea in retrospect)

Jesus, you imagine that? Oh god I don't even want to think about how much more of a pain in the ass it would be if my busted stud was welded in there via thread locker.

    Hi everyone BTW.

I’ve been absent from here for a while. For those that were unaware, I walked from my 27 year long career as a parts manager back in 2022. Spent a couple years “recovering” and have since gone back to work up in the Bay Area. I hope to take this job remote in 25 and beyond. Been coming home to PHX most weekends. Been mountain biking (emtb) on the weekends that I do spend on the peninsula. Pacifica, San Bruno, Half Moon Bay Area. The Taco lives at home in PHX. So, obviously, I’m not tinkering as much. I’m driving a lil V6 rav4 up in the bay.

No, I’m just learning about their existence now. I suppose that I should find a set though. Anyone got a set that they’re not going to use?

I’m having a heck of a time finding another gates RPM blower belt. I wouldn’t have cut mine if I’d known I couldn’t get a new one. What’s the best stock-length belt that we know of nowadays?

Gates stopped making them, it sounded like if enough people keep complaining they may make more.
I think I still have a set of the upgraded studs I can’t remember. I would just stick with stock though. We probably need to be checking the torque on the nuts every oil change since even my upgraded stud snapped.

You broke one of the fancy studs eh? That’s discouraging to hear.

As for the belt, where do I point my complaint email?

Has anyone in here towed around 4.5k lbs with a stock cooling system and a 2.5 SC pulley? I am considering dropping down from my 2.8 since I’m at 6k feet elevation. I am curious if the cooling system is up to the task and if the operating temps will stay in a safe range on long grades

    Welcome to the Bay @BillDaCat8 ! You're a hop and skip away from me, @nudavinci64 @zerotimeouts @thebaker and @12TRDTacoma

I do have a set of the upgraded studs if you are in urgent need of a set.

And if you need any other help, Bay Area advice, etc ..... just holler.

Yep. Check your lower engine idler while you got the truck apart.

I used their website, the reply came from APAteam@gates.com
They said rpm series were slowing down their production of normal belts.

My dad pulls a TT with his truck which has a 2.85 pulley. He has an added trans cooler and as long as ambient temp is below 103 he is fine. Going through the desert when temps are above 103 he said his engine will get hot and trans like 230-240. He has gone across the country twice with his setup plus a few closer instate trips with it as well.

Charge air temps is what I’d be concerned with.

You may want to consider running a fleetrunner belt. They have a little more give which may be better for our particular situation.

Thanks for chiming in, that is something I have noticed that as well. When ambient temps are 95-100*F, the engine will run in the 200-205 range on grades with the 2.8. If it’s in the 70s ambient, it stays around 190-195*F on the coolant. I have a manual, so I don’t have to worry about the trans temps as much, so that’s a relief.

Did he mention what kind of coolant temps he was seeing with 103*F ambient? The highest I’ve seen was around 209 after going up a long grade with it 97*F outside.

This is a big concern as well. I wish there was an easy way to monitor these. I would imagine the heat soak from a 2.5 vs a 2.8 is quite a bit more.

Have you worked with any folks on their tune who tow a lot? Detonation is a real concern as well with long periods of high load

I'm considering that option. Although I haven't found a direct fit part number yet for the 5050705 / 5PK1790 belt.

    Hi Eddie.

Thank you for the welcome. I may just need those studs depending on availability from SCOL for the normies.

I have an idea for the next set that @Athlaos makes tho. It involves the re-thinking of one of the spacers in the stack to prevent that stud from backing out at all. I'd need the threads moved around a little bit though.
