Our house is 2 story, and has 3 total HVAC units. Bedroom area, living room/kitchen, upstairs. Built in 2006. So naturally, about 3 months ago, both of the downstairs units stopped working within 2 days of each other. Called the HVAC company to send our Tech out. The bedroom unit had a leak in the refrigerant line, he repaired it and recharged the system. Living rom / kitchen unit had a blown compressor. Due to the units all being 18 years old, he strongly urged us to replace the entire unit. He said he could replace just the compressor, but the rest of the unit could crap out any day.

We had no choice but to repair the bedroom unit, it was 84* in the damn house with both units out. But since I still haven't found a job yet, we just can't afford to do anything with the other unit. The big problem is going to be, either 1) if I don't find a job soon we will have to dump the house, and there is no way it will sell with one HVAC unit non-functional, or 2) once it gets really cold outside, and we now can't heat the living room / kitchen (our systems are all electric, so AC and heat pump)... my wife is going to be very unhappy. I don't know if small electric space heaters will be enough, if it comes to that. !@#$%^&*!!!!!!!!

that sucks. Have you looked into any companies that are affiliated with clean energy programs? We have some in NJ that cover some of the costs and at 0% interest if you upgrade to high efficiency all electric systems (heat pumps) that qualify for the program.
Also, see if an HVAC company may allow a financing program at low interest rates and they take any state rebates available.
Older systems with R22 refrigerant aren’t worth fixing, but they can be converted with a compatible refrigerant
Check another other companies and get a free second opinion.. unless you really trust the guy who told you your equipment isn’t worth fixing
