I respectfully disagree … I’ve been off-roading and hiking up there since early 2000’s, including two night trips, although I wouldn't recommend that. I’ve seen numerous evidence of illegal immigrants hiking through but have never actually seen any in person. The bad guys are the smugglers and they only operate at night. In the daytime, the illegals that get caught are the stragglers from the night before, or the ones that attempt to cross without a smuggling guide - many end up getting lost. Needless to say, I feel more unsafe in town.

If you plan it right, you can observe the Navy practicing touch and go landings directly on the Otay truck trail. Look for Navy helos circling Otay Mtn. They fly in from IB naval station. I took the pic below last year in June at 5:45p. I was headed west when this helo came down from my six and touched down about two hundred yards in front of me. I took the pic on the Signal app which, apparently, does not geotag pics, but I am pretty sure it touched down at 32.5750000, -116.8884172 , based on memory and the aerial pic on google maps. That “3-1” sign, I found out later, is a marker for the pilots. I remember seeing another marker further east.

There are an abundance of places to off road and camp in San Diego County. Each to their own...

Well, yeah, camping I definitely would not do on/off the truck trail. For a day drive it is the closest off-roading to urban San Diego - not counting Proctor Valley Rd.

Unless the Otay River valley trails are still accessible. Anybody know? Off Heritage Rd, at 32.5855693, -117.0016797 . Went off-roading there last about five years. There was an unlocked gate there but, last I heard, it is locked now. That has some good off-roading trails. It goes in quite a ways, to the edge of the Olympic training facility and below the Alta Rd jails. It should still be open to hiking and biking down from Olympic Pkwy and Hunte Pkwy, but haven't been down there in a while.

Hit or miss if the gate is unlocked. Dirt bags have destroyed gates and fences to go up the hill and around. It was all repaired a few months ago.
You can get in from Alta Rd and never pass a closed gate or signage saying not to.

Through the vernal pools next to the firing range? I went by a year or so and thought I saw a sign. Might have been for something else.

yup, through there. Last time I was there was a few months ago, didnt see any signs or closed gate. Only one gate, not sure if it can even close, has not been in 5-1/2 years.

Just to confirm, so there is not a gate or no trespassing signs over here 32.5908715929351, -116.9151290119425 ? its been a few years since Ive ben out there. One of my favorite shooting spots is down in that canyon! The rain ruts and steep rocky climbs and little creek/puddle crossings usually kept all the riffraff out during winter.

There is HALF of a gate still standing on the west side of the entrance there. Brown wood post about 6 feet from the pavement. Grey (I think) gate. It's in the open position. The other half on the east side was knocked down. More than a year ago. I saw no signs when I was there Tuesday picking up.
If you're shooting out there, pick up your trash. So many people treat it like a dump. I can clean up a some every week (which i do hoping the owner doesnt close it down) but it comes in faster than that

They aren't super small but I got my wife's rings at Charles Koll in Sorrento Valley. I'd highly recommend that place. They don't really talk over the phone, but in person is where it is at.

Good for you! Yes, a great story. Glad you enjoyed it. The border at San Diego nowadays is quite active.Weirdest thing, there is a shopping outlet my wife likes to go to that is right on the border
in San Ysidro. The back of the parking lot is the border fence! It's not uncommon for smuggler's panga sized boats to come ashore at night along the San Diego coast line.

Is the Truck shop offering tokens to "Goldfinger" while you wait for service and repairs?
