Alternator Voltage Adjustment

I currently have my truck tuned and need to get a new battery. I am thinking about getting an Odyssey AGM battery. Do I really need to pay $300 for a whole new tune just to get the alternator output voltage adjusted to 14.5 volts or is there a way to just get a addon tune for the alternator?

Honestly, we just warn of it, but all I would suggest is a trickle charger every month or two. It's more of an issue with demand on the AGM from accessories on top of lower charging voltage.

A trickle charger is 40$ and its good just to own one.

 

I own an older cheaper battery charger but not sure if it will work or if I need a newer model.

 

I've been running a Northstar since 2018 on a stock "2014 Sport" charging system.

The 3rd Gen alternator is regulated by a PCM/ECU.

 

Yep I have the Kdmax Pro tune. When I reached out to them he said something about sending a file. Then said he would love to get me on this other tune but it would cost $300. That was a few days ago and I haven't heard from him since.

 

The chargers made for lead acid batteries aren't great to use newer AGM and Lithium car batteries. The trickle charger I use for my BMW has separate charging modes for each battery type.

 

NOCO makes chargers for AGM and the latest lithium Life PO4 batteries.

 

Go back to the same tuner, ask what they charge for re-flash they will usually not charge you for the full tune. You're already un locked. Should be somewhere in the $50 - $100 for the re-flash. Would probably be on the lower side if you catch them at a spot where they are already doing tunes.

 

I did and he said that he would love to get me on the new tune that he has for $300. He also said something about sending a file around a week ago and I haven't heard from him since. Between starting with Orange Virus tunes then having to pay for Vf tuner and Kdmax pro I have spent about $1300 so far. Not looking forward to spending another $300 for slightly better performance and to be able to use an AGM Battery.

 

Which NOCO charger are you suggesting the genius 2 or up to 10.

 

I've had Genius 2 for three years and it has worked great keeping mine topped up all throughout covid. I still use it periodically on both of our vehicles to desulfate and top off.

2 is slow on larger truck batteries so I'd get a 5 or higher if you need to charge/top off overnight or faster. I'll just leave mine plugged in the garage if I know I don't have to go anywhere for a day or two

 

Ive been using a genius 10 for a few years and its done exactly what i need it to.

 

I think the charge is because of the change over from KDMax to YotaWerx. There was about a 2 month period where it was free to change over, but that has ended.

So there will be a charge for switching over from KDMax Pro 9.0 to YotaWerx Blackhawk 2.0.

 

I believe you are correct and maybe I misunderstood the message he sent me. Because when he said he would send a file I thought he meant a file just for the voltage.

Hey Rich, AGMs just prefer a slightly higher voltage curve and yes we would provide a flash file that includes that adjustment. While I would love to provide you with the newer YotaWerx Blackhawk tune I now offer it's a $300 cost which I know is a large investment. I wish I could offer a better deal on that....and if you are interested but just not in the cost please let me know. If I get enough customers wanting the on-going support but looking for a more cost-effective solution perhaps we can get a deal together!

 

If you can flash your own truck, and paid for the tune in the past, you can get an AGM battery tune file for free.
