Hey guys...My 95 3.4 is very picky when it comes to OBD 2 dongles. As most of you know this was the 1st year for OBD 2 reading for the Tacoma. I know the dongle has to be 9141 compatible but every dongle I buy does not work... even tho they say its 9141 compatible. Can anyone recomend a dongle that works for sure??? I use the Torque app.
I do have a dongle that works and I ordered the same one again but every newer on I try does not work. Please be brand and model specific. Thx Mike

AFAIK the Torque app scans through all protocols and ELM327 based adapters should work with all of them. If I'm wrong? Sorry about the 5 bucks

Yea...I have a few of those. They do not work on a 95 Tacoma.

I use a PLX Devices Kiwi 3. Not cheap, but seems to be of higher quality than the majority of the $5-20 variants on the market. I use it with DashCommand (on Android) primarily, but I've used it with several apps in the past on both Android and iOS. '00 Tacoma.

Got it way back in the day when I got my first CEL, and have been using it ever since: Oh shit, the engine light’s on – upgrading the air filter – AdventureTaco

I've been using the Carista one since 2017. It is bluetooth, so it will not block your wifi. It works with Dash Command, OBDFusion, and EngineLink.

I suggest trying other apps than torque just to see if it is a torque connection issue rather than a truck issue.

I've found that if I'm using Torque it's not enough to add the OBD2 adapter in my phone's Bluetooth settings. I have to go into the settings in Torque and add it as well.

Rebuilding seats with leather from furniture and extra padding. Might put leather on the dash and other interior parts.

Yep, gotta pair with it in the OS then tell Torque to use it. I have used a bunch of BT dongles over the years and every one of them has worked with Torque. But is the '95 even OBDII? Not sure on these but many cars produced in 1995 were OBDI.

Yes the 95 is OBD2. It was the first year of OBD2. I have a dongle that works right now. Im just looking for a back up. Since I cant seem to find the one I bought a few years ago...

I took a look at my past Amazon purchases and this one has been good on both Toyota and BMW, no issues at all and its cheap.

So this is all fairly new to me. Yes its pretty rudimentary stuff but hey...

Maybe some one can guide me here. Be gentle LOL.

I got an ebay dongle, downloaded the free torque app on the tablet. The torque app doesnt work. It does however give a preprogrammed example while in the vehicle where it wont do this when not around the vehicle.

What does this even mean? Is it because its on my tablet? Not a working dongle? I'm gathering some dongles work on a particular vehicle while some won't. Its not that they are bad, its just they arent right for that spacific vehicle in some way...?

Next move, buy a new/different dongle or two?

Pair the dongle with your phone the in Torque go into settings and tell it which Bluetooth device to use. Should work after that.

I run an Ultragauge in my 95.5. Pretty sure a scangauge would work too.
Never tried any of the Bluetooth ones though.
These are meant to be left plugged in and mounted, not just used for diagnostics though. I use mine primarily to keep an eye on engine temps with a higher resolution than the dash temp gauge

I’ve never had any difficulties with any ObdII readers, I thought we were fully compliant and compatible with the standard.

So problem may be in the tablet?

I've been using that same one in all our cars and it's worked fine. I've successfully used it in Toyota, GM, Honda, and Ram over the years.

It could be but I doubt it. What kind of Tablet? Got a phone you can use to test it out?

Did you go into the settings menu on the Torque home screen, go to obd2 adapter settings, the go to choose Bluetooth device, then select the one you want to use? I have two of those Veepak adapters (one in my commuter and one in my Taco) and I have to go into settings on Torque and change them each time. That's one of the things I don't like about Torque.
