2024 Tacoma Auto Transmission

Just take a look at the complaints yourself, look up some other vehicles, and then do some simple math. It's up to 15 now and includes stuff like cracked windshield and few about transmissions. Mid-July when I got mine auto news said 104,000 had shipped now. The actual small percentage weighted by what other vehicle complaints look like did not scare me away. A Chevrolet Colorado had same 13 complaints and 2 recalls the Tacoma doesn't have. Nissan Frontiers also have 2 to 0 Tacoma recalls.

Of course there could be more problems but not even 1% having problems didn't scare me. On top of that the Tacoma is a top safety pick while most of its competition remains mediocre at best. Of course I'll be unhappy if a problem occurs but I cannot live my life with the levels of daft and paranoia I'm always seeing around me.

Edit: I looked up my Tacoma, the Sienna traded, the Camry we had years ago now and my wife's German car. 0 TDBs for the Tacoma and a number for the others. Again, I won't be happy if I do have a problem but nothing major is showing up. The Sienna considered legendary good had brakes and doors TSBs and recalls when it was new. They didn't light up journalists to start stoking paranoia.

 

I don't think people are obsessing about the numbers. Just looking for communalities. Like is it a particular batch of transmissions, or a particular component, manufacturing date etc.

 

I don't know if I would considering a failing transmission on a brand new vehicle just a first year problem?

 

Anyone here have one replaced? Are replacement transmissions readily available or should people expect to be sitting in a loaner for a while?

 

It’ll be fine.. If you want it buy it. Anything goes wrong with any year/model Tacoma makes the YouTubers $$. It’s been and will almost certainly stay the most reliable pickup. There is no way possible to efficiently manufacture anything at volume without having a few defects. I’m honestly surprised there hasn’t been more issues! The early Tundras were a mess! Axle nuts, trim gaps, rattles, headliners sagging, center console, window trim causing wind noise, windows not fitting in the channel properly, infotainment problems, and of course the engine failures that Toyota is addressing far quicker than any other manufacturer would.

My Tacoma was built in late May and is tight. And it’s not a pavement princess..The only defect I’ve found is the rear door panels, not bad and barely noticeable but Toyota should have done a little better job manufacturing them? The internal bump stops had me concerned but I installed Icon shock top plates $70 for a piece of mind.

 

I’ve heard there’s a TSB for the fender flare plastics being too soft a plastic? Have you heard of this one?

 

I have 300s mile on mine and it hasn't detonated yet.
I have 170k on my 2nd Gen. I hope I'm not forced to drive it when both the motor and tranny simultaneously seize on the 4th gen.
That's me living on the edge.

 

Well it kind of seems Chevy has transmission issues too. So don't swap it out for a GM one.

Funny because the fact that it had 6 speeds was a complaint that I remember seeing. More speeds generally equals more gear hunting too, which was another complaint.

 

Most of the transmission issues I've heard about have to do with the manual transmission and I don't even know how common said issues are.

 

My experience has been more gear hunting is a symptom of a craptacular design.

At this point I've got several trips behind me where my past Toyotas with V6 and 6 speed auto or 5 speed manual would be shifting more. I've even blown by gen 3 models and Siennas with same transmission with the gen 4 steady in 7th or 8th both overdrive IIRC while I've heard the earlier models shift or scream in pain. For both of freeway and secondary roads the gen 4 for masterfully sits near peak torque and you just need to decide how much you want to blow on the fire.

I'm SO glad I waited for gen 4 plus the right long bed and did not get another manual transmission as much as I know gen 3 are good. The powertrain, comfort, quiet and top safety pick all in same package are fantastic.

 

The 8 speed in my 4th Gen has zero perceptible gear hunting nor turbo lag for that matter. That transmission paired with the 2.4 turbo is very smooth application of power.

According to TW, the future detonation is a near certainty. When it does, I’ll share the VIN because it will end up on some dealers lot and the removal and the replacement won’t be on the Car Fax.

 

What about the people that had their trans fail but don't post about is anywhere?

Using internet articles and forum post as your data source is nowhere close to accurate.

 

What happened to the rear panels

It’s a serious issue but it’s also an issue I’m sure they will resolve.

 

Yeah it definitely took a bit to get the programming right. But I remember hearing about gear hunting complaints, a lot, when Ford and GM brought out the 10-spees transmission. Then again, at that time 4 speed is what most were used to which hardly ever shifted.

It depends if new vehicles are still failing in 2-3 years.

When I was in manufacturing, you absolutely saw an increase in defects whenever you rolled out a new product or process.

Whether it's a quality control issue or a design issue is a secondary question, to me at least. The main question is will Toyota address the root cause, and how long will it take?

This is all assuming there is a single underlying cause to these sporadic trans failures, I really have no idea aside from what I've read on here.
