Hoping to cash in on some karma on this place lending out stuff and doing some TW Express…

    Two things:

    1) How do you know if a CV with a ripped boot can not be salvaged? I drove somewhere between 20 and 60 miles on washboard in sand/dirt yesterday when a torn outer boot. It looks like most of the grease has been ejected but it’s not too dirty in there yet…

    2) Help requested for Junction today to source and swap in a new/used 2nd gen passenger CV.

You know if the CV is bad if you hear *crunch crunch crunch crackle crackle pop* when it turns and the bearings fall out. I've seen guys run days with torn boots and the CVS held up

Take a close look at the needle bearings when you get it apart. I was going to reboot one years ago that had a few broken needles (less than 5) that I decided wasn't worth the effort and putting back in my truck. It was working fine, not making any noise, and probably would have been fine for many more miles until it would have inevitably blown up doing something stupid on the trail...likely how the needles broke to begin with.

So if it’s not making any noises, should I just drive all the way back home to the front range and assess then?

You'll be fine, send it back to the front range. Use it for a core at CVJ and get the OEM boots on the replacement.

Thanks for the offer. I’m going to just head back home since others reduced my worries and I’d rather see if I can just reboot this rather than toss a parts store CV at it.

Have you ridden the plunge yet? This year? I’m wondering how it’s getting burned in and packed down.

I ran NAPA CVs for a long time with a spare in the truck. If broken, NAPA would replace, but I looked up to see their current warranty and the boot tearing voids it ha. They used to take them with just a torn boot

I haven't ridden it since the year it opened, and it was horrible. Horrible due to conditions, a local shop said it was good and we had to basically walk/slide the whole way down because of the mud. I don't know if I ever want to go back.

That’s consistent with what I heard. That’s a bummer. I may do it someday, but it’s not on the top of my list.

I rode it a couple years ago, thought it was OK at best. I did like the high-exposure switchbacks though that everyone else complains about.

Stop by Rife on your way back and ride the Grand Hogback trails. Those are excellent. Whoever built those should have built the Plunge...

I believe it was single track solutions that did the rifle trails. @RtacomaN keeps telling me about them. I’ll probably ride them in the next month or two when I head back out to rifle for some rock climbing.

this coming weekend I am hoping to try and ride the whole enchilada the last three times I’ve tried the conditions or weather kept me from the top section in the La Sal mountains. The first time I tried was 2008 so hopefully this year is finally the year!

Any real estate guru's on here, or anyone that knows anything about purchasing and developing land with an old coal mine on it?

Is there anything historical about the mine? That might slow development down.

I have heard of gold mine claim being very "tricky" to put permeant structures on but never anything on Coal mines.

Same here, but we live in a state where they change the rules on a whim.
Probably best to not bring it up at signing. :D
