The right support cable on my lift gate appears shorter, so it’s holding the whole weight of the tailgate (and anything I put onto it). You can see my son pulling on the loose left side. Is there any way to fix this?

Mine is the kinda sorta the same way with the left seemingly loose. But when I jump on top of only the left side it pulls taut. Can you replicate?

Edit: Mine isn't as loose as that.

Try to switching the cables sides for shits and giggles. While removed, compare the length.

Took it to the dealership and after waiting 3.5 hours they said it’s fine. I interrogated them and showed them how every other Tacoma on the showroom floor has 2 taught cables and they just mumbled some bullshit. Dealerships are great and taking your money but awful at solving problems. I may just stick something in the cable loop to fix it on my trillion dollar truck. As I was leaving I saw a 2023 trd pro like my old one, and had a moment of sadness. Whatever.

Did you try removing and comparing the length of both cables? Or switch them sides to see if they follow the cable.

I don’t have the tools to remove the bottom bolt / star screw thing. But I took off the clips. Both appear to be 16.5” long. So the bed must be warped or something but it looks fine visually. I took a ton of measurements and it’s all the same both sides. I just cannot explain it. The distances between the two points are about 1/8” off somehow.

I’m really just bummed out. Quality control seems weak and toyota response even weaker. Makes me wonder what else is fucked up on this truck. I wish I had my old faithful 3G. After all this money I do not feel comfortable having my family sit on the tailgate and eat lunch when camping like we used to do.

If the cables are the same length, the mount points on the tailgate or the bed might be off.

Does the 4th Gen tailgate cables need a tool? Looks like a quick release tab on the cable, from your pic.

I'd check the lengths (support the tailgate) if they are unequal, swap them with a 4th Gen on the lot. Since it's "not a problem" per the dealership. Park your truck in a nearby parking lot and take a new truck on a "test drive" cable swap mission. Slightly illegal, probably....

Or, find a better dealership..... that's probably a more legal way to go......

Yeah, find a better dealership. Not all service departments are the same. Better than jail.

Yeah I almost got the Grenadier Trialmaster. It’s too tall. And the pickup is chicken taxed to 100K.

I swapped the cables and it improved. I also noticed the bolt on the right side was driven awkwardly and that’s probably why it’s doing this. Now if I sit on the tailgate it actually tightens on the left side. But it’s loose with no weight. I guess I can live with that.

At least it’s not a deflected tailgate or a twisted frame or something too weird. Just less than perfect finish.

Interesting, it was smaller than I expected, which was a good thing.

Glad you figured it out, that would drive my OCD nuts too.

Overall it’s nice and small. But way too tall. Won’t fit in my garage at work and just barely gets into my garage at home. Gripes and buyers remorse aside, the 24 Tacoma is way quieter, smoother, and more comfy. I’ll report out later on off-road capability.

I still think the cable thing is annoying but now we’re talking 1/16” of an inch or less.

I see, too tall for the garage. Was assuming it was a tall vehicle like Ford Super Duty.

Sorry you’re having buyers remorse, guessing because of the price justification. Maybe an Off-road trim would have been better? Not quite the hit on the bank account. Even with the premium package still cheaper than a TH.

Over heard a woman complaining about her date’s F150 that he loved. She said no matter how nice or how much money he had in it, it is still a F150.

It is only a vehicle, you can off it at anytime.

Load up the bed with cinder blocks and do a few jumps. I'm sure the cables will settle a bit

She just can't handle him spending money on the F150 instead of her.

Nah - I am glad I went all in. My OCD over inconsequential shit will settle down. I always do this when I make a big purchase. Can’t wait to take it out on the trails.
